Estepona will become one of Andalusia’s main climbing hubs for two days this October. The town’s Municipal Climbing Wall will host the Andalusian Lead Climbing Championship on 24 and 25 October 2026, with the event also serving as the second round of the Andalusian Lead Climbing Cup.

Climbers of different ages will compete throughout the weekend at the facilities located within Estepona’s Fair and Sports Complex.

The competition is organised by Grupo de Montaña Estepona (GRUME) and the Andalusian Federation of Mountain Sports, Climbing and Hiking (FADMES), with the support of Estepona Town Hall.

Two full days of competition

The programme will take up most of the weekend.

On Saturday 24 October, activity will run from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm.

On Sunday 25, the competition will begin even earlier, at 7:45 am, and is expected to finish at around 5:30 pm.

Different age groups and competition stages will take place throughout both days.

From under-nine climbers to veterans

One of the main characteristics of the championship is the wide range of ages represented.

The categories include:

  • U9
  • U11
  • U13
  • U15
  • U17
  • U19
  • Open
  • Promotion
  • Veteran

This means spectators will be able to watch both some of Andalusia’s youngest climbing talent and highly experienced competitors.

How does lead climbing work?

Lead climbing involves progressing up a route and trying to reach the highest possible point.

Competitors must complete a sequence of increasingly difficult movements while remaining protected by a rope.

It is not simply a test of strength.

Technique, endurance, route reading and energy management all play an important role in how far a climber can progress.

The higher an athlete reaches on the route, the better their result.

Younger climbers will compete using Top Rope

The U9, U11 and U13 categories will use the Top Rope system.

In this format, the safety rope is already fixed from the top of the climbing wall.

This allows younger climbers to focus on movement and route progression while using a safety system particularly suited to their age groups.

Flash and on-sight formats for older categories

From U15 upwards, competitors will climb using flash and on-sight formats.

In a flash competition, climbers may receive some information about the route before starting their attempt.

In an on-sight climb, however, they must tackle the route without having practised it beforehand.

This format places even greater emphasis on a climber’s ability to quickly interpret holds, movements and body positions.

Helmets will be compulsory in several categories

Safety will play a central role throughout the championship.

According to the competition rules, helmets will be compulsory in the U15, U17, U19, Promotion, Open and Veteran categories.

All participants must also meet the technical and federation requirements established for the event.

A Promotion category for developing climbers

The event also includes a Promotion category.

It can be mixed and is intended for athletes who have not yet achieved certain results in the main competitive divisions.

Specifically, climbers who have reached the podium in Cup events during the previous two years in the U19, Open or Veteran categories cannot enter.

The aim is to give developing climbers a competitive space before moving into the highest-level categories.

How to take part

Registration remains open until 11:59 pm on 16 October through the Andalusian federation.

To be eligible for podium positions and score points towards the Andalusian Cup, competitors must hold a valid annual FADMES or FEDME licence.

To be included in the final classification for the Andalusian Championship itself, the licence must have been processed through the Andalusian Federation of Mountain Sports, Climbing and Hiking.

A provincial youth championship will also be held

The weekend will also include a competition specifically linked to younger climbers from Málaga province.

Athletes with a valid annual federation licence who live in Málaga province, or whose licence has been processed by a Málaga-based club, will also be able to compete in the Málaga Provincial School-Age Lead Climbing Championship.

This adds an important development element to the event and provides another competitive opportunity for younger local athletes.

Second round of the 2026 Andalusian Cup

The Estepona event is not an isolated competition.

It forms part of the 2026 Andalusian Lead Climbing Cup, which includes several rounds across the season.

After the opening event in Manilva, Estepona will host the second round before the circuit moves on to Huelva for the final event.

This means the Costa del Sol will play an important role in this year’s regional climbing calendar.

Estepona continues to support climbing

The Municipal Climbing Wall has hosted regional competitions before and will once again become the venue for one of Andalusia’s leading events in the discipline.

The facilities are located within the Estepona Fair and Sports Complex, where competitors, coaches, clubs and spectators will gather throughout the weekend.

The championship also strengthens the presence of mountain and climbing sports within the municipality’s wider sporting programme.

Can spectators attend?

You do not need to be competing to attend.

Anyone curious about sport climbing will be able to visit the venue during the weekend and watch the different categories in action.

The extensive timetable means spectators can see everything from junior competition to open and veteran categories.

It can also be a good opportunity for anyone who has never watched a lead climbing event before to understand how the discipline works.

Charity bar during the event

A charity bar run by Asociación Entregatos de Estepona will also be available throughout both days.

Spectators will be able to use the service while following the competition.

The initiative adds a charitable element to a weekend otherwise focused mainly on sport.

A different weekend plan in Estepona

The championship offers a different way to spend the final weekend of October.

Beyond the beaches and seafront, Estepona will showcase another side of its sporting scene with two full days dedicated to climbing.

For those who already practise the sport, it will be an opportunity to watch some of Andalusia’s leading competitors.

And for anyone simply curious, the championship offers a chance to discover a discipline where strength, balance, strategy and concentration are equally important.
