Torremolinos Municipal Library is heading into the second half of October with a packed cultural programme. Literature, theatre, writing, emotional wellbeing and children’s activities will take place over the coming weeks at the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Cultural Centre and other municipal venues.

The programme is designed to appeal to very different audiences, from children discovering the joy of reading to adults interested in creative writing, art or personal development.

One of the key dates will be 24 October, Libraries Day, when Torremolinos will also take literature into the streets with an original installation in Plaza Costa del Sol.

Workshops on writing, creativity and emotional wellbeing

A large part of October’s programme revolves around recurring workshops.

One of them is ‘Working with emotions in times of change’, led by Conchi Bañasco.

After starting on 13 October, further sessions will take place on 20 and 27 October in the cinema room at the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Cultural Centre.

The activity combines emotional intelligence exercises, art therapy and mindfulness with practical tools designed to improve emotional self-regulation and help participants deal with periods of change.

Art therapy every Wednesday

Wednesdays are also reserved for ‘Give shape to what you feel’, an art therapy workshop that uses creativity as a form of expression.

The sessions encourage participants to explore feelings and personal experiences through different artistic techniques.

The aim is not simply to learn how to create art, but to use the creative process as a tool for reflection and wellbeing.

Creative writing to turn ideas into stories

Literature plays an especially important role throughout the month.

Every Wednesday, the cinema room at the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Cultural Centre hosts a creative writing workshop led by Felipe Cambón.

The sessions are designed to help participants develop narrative skills and learn how to turn ideas into finished texts.

Story structure, characters, style and different writing techniques form part of a programme aimed at both beginners and those looking to improve their creative writing.

‘Relatistas de Torremolinos’ returns in October

Another programme focused on literary creation is ‘Relatistas de Torremolinos’.

The workshop, led by Cristina Soriano, has two sessions scheduled this month: Friday 16 and Friday 30 October.

Activities take place at the El Pozuelo Active Participation Centre.

The aim is to provide a regular space where people who enjoy writing can develop short stories, share their work and explore different narrative tools.

A space to explore emotions calmly

On Thursdays, the El Pozuelo Active Participation Centre also hosts ‘Emotions in Calm’.

The activity is again led by Conchi Bañasco.

The sessions focus on self-care, calmness and the way people relate to their emotions.

In this way, the library programme expands beyond books and includes activities linked to wellbeing and personal development.

Reading clubs bring readers together again

October also marks the return of the reading clubs.

The programme includes a children’s reading club aimed at boys and girls aged 7 to 11, designed to encourage reading habits from an early age.

The idea is not only to read a book, but also to share opinions, discuss stories and discover literature alongside other children.

Sessions are held in the library’s children’s room.

‘Ellas escriben’ returns on 24 October

Adults will also have their own shared reading space.

A new session of ‘Ellas escriben’, coordinated by Marina Ortega, is scheduled for 24 October.

The club brings participants together around selected literary works, giving them the opportunity to exchange impressions and explore books in greater depth.

The date will also coincide with Libraries Day, which this year will feature a special programme in Torremolinos.

Telephone booths where you can listen to literature

One of the most original events of the month will take place on Saturday 24 October.

Torremolinos will install several ‘Literary Booths’ in Plaza Costa del Sol.

At first glance, they will look like old-fashioned telephone boxes.

But when visitors enter and pick up the receiver, they will be able to listen to excerpts from major works of literature.

The initiative turns reading into an audio experience and takes books beyond the walls of the library.

From Gloria Fuertes to Shakespeare

The booths will feature poems and texts by authors from very different periods and traditions.

The selection includes Gloria Fuertes, Antonio Machado and William Shakespeare, among other major figures in Spanish and international literature.

The recordings will be performed by professional actors.

The installation will be available during the morning of 24 October in Plaza Costa del Sol and will be free to visit.

Storytelling and theatre for younger audiences

Libraries Day will also include an activity designed especially for children.

The company La Gatika Producciones will perform ‘The Book of Stories’, a theatrical storytelling show featuring familiar characters and elements from well-known tales.

The performance combines narration, music, games, dancing, riddles and small touches of magic.

The aim is to introduce children to literature through an interactive experience that goes beyond traditional reading.

New book presentations

Book presentations complete the October programme.

The calendar began on 15 October with ‘Camila’, by Marta Scott, in the Manuel Blasco room.

On Saturday 17 October, the children’s room will host the presentation of ‘Aoka, la reina guerrera’, by Angie Fernanda González Castro.

It will be one of the weekend’s cultural events in Torremolinos.

‘El reino sin importancia’ closes the month’s presentations

The final book presentation is scheduled for 29 October.

Author Jana will present El reino sin importancia in the Manuel Blasco room.

The book offers a story with several layers of interpretation, designed to connect with both younger readers and adults.

This event will close the library’s October book presentation programme.

Theatre remembers the women of the Generation of ’27

The programme also includes performing arts.

This Friday 16 October, the auditorium at the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Cultural Centre will host ‘Ellas son el 27’.

The performance forms part of activities marking Women Writers’ Day and the centenary of the Generation of ’27.

The play focuses on the female creators who were part of this important cultural movement but whose work remained much less visible for decades than that of their male contemporaries.

Among them were the artists and writers known as Las Sinsombrero.

A free performance this Friday

Ellas son el 27 begins at 8:00 pm at the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Cultural Centre.

Admission is free until capacity is reached.

The production has been created by Asociación Cultural Artístika and aims to recover the memory and artistic contribution of women linked to the Generation of ’27.

In this way, the library connects literature with theatre and cultural history.

Many activities are free, but some require registration

A large part of the programme can be enjoyed free of charge.

Book presentations, Libraries Day activities and several cultural events offer free admission until capacity is reached.

However, workshops and some reading clubs have limited places and require advance registration.

Torremolinos Town Hall allows participants to register through the Torremolinos Despega app or through the channels provided by the library.

A cultural building with almost a century of history

Most activities take place at the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Cultural Centre, located at Calle de la Cruz, 42.

The building was constructed in 1935 and today houses different cultural rooms, exhibition spaces, study areas and the municipal library.

Its role extends well beyond lending books.

Throughout the year, it hosts exhibitions, meetings, workshops, presentations and activities for different generations.

A library that goes far beyond books

October’s programme reflects precisely that evolution.

Public libraries have increasingly become spaces where reading coexists with learning, creativity and community participation.

In Torremolinos this month, visitors can move from a reading club to a theatre performance, learn creative writing, join an emotional wellbeing workshop or listen to Shakespeare inside an old-fashioned telephone booth.

It is a varied programme that makes the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Cultural Centre one of the town’s main cultural hubs this autumn.
