This hiking trail connects two of the most beautiful villages in Málaga

If you are a lover of nature, history, and trails that challenge your senses, this experience is for you. Stage 28 of the Gran Senda de Málaga connects two gems of the province: two of the most beautiful villages of Málaga such as Genalguacil and Casares, considered by many as two of the most picturesque and magical in Málaga. Spanning 20 kilometers, this route immerses you in a journey full of contrasts, spectacular landscapes, and a true trip to the heart of Andalusian tradition.

The route begins in Genalguacil, known as the Village Museum for its streets adorned with outdoor art pieces. From the Poyetes viewpoint, the trail leads us towards the Cerecillo site. In this initial section, among terraces of olive trees and prickly pears, the first holm oaks and cork oaks begin to appear, witnesses to the natural richness of the surroundings. Soon, the path ascends to the Helechal house, from where the views towards Genalguacil and the surrounding mountains are simply breathtaking.

The Puerto de la Loma marks a turning point in the journey, offering us wide-ranging landscapes. To the right, the ruins of the Nuestra Señora de Vallyvana wine press remind us of the historical importance of these lands in agricultural production. The Posteruelas hill invites us to a rest with panoramic views of the Sierra Bermeja and the white villages of the lower Genal. The descent takes us down the Bañuela slope, a narrow path between slates that offers privileged views over the Almárchal river basin. Upon reaching the confluence of the Almárchal river with the gorge of the Cueva del Vaque, we find the charming charco de la Vega, a perfect spot to stop and enjoy the serenity of the place.

The route continues through a lush cork oak forest that leads to the Puerto del Lentisco, from where the white silhouette of Casares can be seen on the horizon. Before reaching the village, we will pass through the Puerto Paloma, a natural viewpoint from which the imposing formations of the Sierra Crestellina and the Alberquilla gorge can be appreciated. This area is a true paradise for biodiversity lovers, with a mix of pines, cork oaks, and holm oaks providing shade to the hiker. The last part of the route descends towards the Natural Site of Sierra Crestellina. From the Puerto de los Guardas, there is a privileged view of the Mediterranean Sea, announcing the proximity of Casares. The path continues between country houses and small orchards, until reaching the historic center of the village. Casares, with its narrow, cobblestone streets, invites you to lose yourself among its corners until reaching the Plaza de España, where the four spouts of the Carlos III fountain mark the end of the journey.

Where to start the route

Genalguacil is connected to the rest of the Serranía de Ronda via MA-8304 and MA-8305, which lead to the Ronda-Algeciras road (A-369). Alternatively, from Estepona on the Costa del Sol, take the MA-8301 up to Puerto de Peñas Blancas. From there, you can either connect to the village via Jubrique or go directly via MA-8302, which passes by the municipal hotel but is still pending complete paving. The starting point would be the Mirador de los Poyetes or Lomilla, in the southern part of Genalguacil, very close to the Church and at the end of Calle Real. There is a parking area at the same starting point.
