San Pedro Alcántara Popular Race celebrates 30 years with the goal of reaching 1,000 participants
The event will take place on 12 October over a five-kilometre route along the seafront and will include 17 male and female categories, as well as races for people with disabilities and young children.
San Pedro Alcántara will celebrate a particularly special edition of its Popular Race on 12 October. The event reaches its 30th anniversary this year with the goal of setting a new participation record and getting close to 1,000 runners.
The race will start at 10:00 am, with the main course covering five kilometres along the San Pedro Alcántara seafront.
With several days still to go, organisers have already registered more than 750 participants, around 150 more than at the same point last year.
The aim is to beat the 850 runners from 2025
The previous edition attracted around 850 runners, a figure the San Pedro Athletics Club hopes to surpass this year.
The pace of registrations suggests that could happen.
With 750 runners already signed up before registration closes, organisers are even aiming for the symbolic milestone of 1,000 participants.
Over the past three decades, the race has become one of San Pedro Alcántara’s most established sporting events and is closely linked to the celebrations surrounding the town’s patron saint festivities.
Five kilometres beside the sea
The main race will follow an urban five-kilometre route along the seafront.
The course combines competition with one of the most recognisable parts of San Pedro Alcántara, with much of the race taking place beside the Mediterranean.
The distance is accessible enough for both regular runners and people looking to take part in a popular event without tackling a longer course.
Its format also makes it suitable for a wide range of ages and abilities.
A race in memory of Julio García Cruz
The event also has a strong connection with the history of local athletics.
The race is held in memory of Julio García Cruz, founder of the San Pedro Athletics Club.
His name remains closely linked to an event that has grown over three decades and now attracts hundreds of runners.
The tribute reinforces the race’s connection with San Pedro Alcántara’s own sporting community.
17 male and female categories
Organisers have created a broad programme to encourage runners of different ages to take part.
The event will include 17 male and female categories.
There will also be a specific category for people with disabilities.
Young children will have their own minipeques event, allowing even the youngest participants to be part of the day.
The aim is to preserve the race’s popular and inclusive character rather than focusing only on the main competitive event.
Registration closes on 10 October
Anyone still interested in taking part has a few days left to register.
Entries remain open until 10 October through the Dorsal Chip platform.
Organisers recommend completing registration before the deadline, particularly given the increase in participation compared with last year.
Current figures suggest that the 2026 edition could become one of the largest in the race’s history.
A race linked to the San Pedro Alcántara festivities
The event takes place just days before the main celebrations of the San Pedro Alcántara festivities.
This timing means the race forms part of the festive atmosphere that surrounds the town during October.
Over its thirty-year history, the event has strengthened this connection between sport, local participation and the annual festivities.
The 2026 edition also comes during a particularly active year for sport in San Pedro.
More than 25 sporting events in San Pedro during 2026
Marbella Town Hall says that San Pedro Alcántara has hosted more than 25 sporting events so far this year.
The Popular Race joins that calendar as one of the most traditional events.
Alongside competitions organised directly by public institutions, the area also hosts events promoted by local sports clubs.
The wider aim is to maintain a varied sporting calendar combining major events with grassroots activities.
A charitable side to the race
The day will once again include a charitable element.
The Arama association will manage a bar during the event.
In addition, the Luna Blanca association will collect trainers and sports equipment.
All donated material will be sent to projects in Senegal.
Participants and spectators will be able to support the initiative by bringing sports shoes and other reusable equipment.
Sport and solidarity in the same event
These initiatives give the race a wider role beyond sporting results.
The event is also designed as a meeting point for families, clubs and residents of San Pedro Alcántara.
Taking part in one of the categories, attending as a spectator or supporting the donation drive all provide different ways to get involved.
The result is an event that combines popular sport, memory, local festivities and solidarity.
