Torremolinos opens a new 1,000-square-metre Skate Plaza with a dedicated surf skate area

Torremolinos has opened a new space for skateboarding and surf skate enthusiasts. The municipality has inaugurated its new Skate Plaza, a sports facility covering 1,035 square metres and designed to bring the feel of street skating into a purpose-built environment.

The facility is located opposite the Monumento al Turista roundabout, on municipal land between Calle Costa Rica, Avenida de los Manantiales and Avenida de la Libertad.

Unlike a traditional skatepark, the project has been designed to resemble a real urban plaza, with most of its furniture and level changes incorporated directly into the skating lines.

More than 1,000 square metres for skate and surf skate

The overall site covers around 2,400 square metres, with 1,035 square metres dedicated specifically to sports use.

Of that total, 703 square metres form the main Skate Plaza, while another 332 square metres are reserved for surf skate.

The surf skate area includes a wave-style ramp designed to recreate some of the movements used in surfing.

This discipline has become especially popular in coastal areas, as it allows riders to practise turns, balance and flowing movements similar to those used on a surfboard.

More than a conventional skatepark

One of the main differences in the new facility is its design.

Instead of focusing only on large ramps and artificial obstacles, the space includes benches, planters, sloping surfaces, bins and other features inspired by a real city square, all designed to be skateable.

The aim is to recover the original spirit of skateboarding, a sport that grew out of using stairs, kerbs, benches and other elements found in the street.

The design also includes references to well-known skate spots in Málaga, Madrid, Barcelona and international cities such as Philadelphia.

Designed by architect and skater Daniel Yábar

The new Skate Plaza was designed by Daniel Yábar, an architect who specialises in this type of facility and is also a skater himself.

That combination of professional and practical experience helped shape a space based on how skaters actually move, rather than simply placing separate obstacles around the site.

The project also reinterprets several historic skate spots that have disappeared over the years, bringing some of their character back for a new generation.

The result is a facility where users can create their own lines and combinations depending on their style and level.

A new meeting point for the skating community

Torremolinos Town Hall sees the facility not only as a sports venue but also as a meeting place for different generations and urban disciplines.

The project responds to growing demand for dedicated areas for sports that have traditionally been practised in streets and public squares without specific facilities.

It also provides a new outdoor sports option for younger residents and visitors.

The new plaza attracted numerous skaters on its opening day, giving local users the first chance to test its different features and routes.

More than €223,000 invested in the project

The Skate Plaza required an investment of €223,199.99.

The project was funded through the Málaga Provincial Council’s Municipal Economic Assistance Plan, PAEM 2023, second phase.

The work also included a new pedestrian access from Avenida de los Manantiales, improvements to landscaped areas and new connecting spaces to integrate the facility into its surroundings.

Accessibility, safety and coexistence with the existing urban environment were also taken into account during the design and construction process.

Torremolinos strengthens its commitment to urban sports

The Skate Plaza forms part of a broader municipal strategy to expand opportunities for outdoor sport.

Torremolinos is also preparing a new Pump Track circuit in El Pinillo, near the Javier Imbroda sports hall, intended for bicycles, skateboards, scooters and other non-motorised activities.

For now, however, the Skate Plaza already gives the town a dedicated space built specifically around skate culture and the idea of skating in a plaza.

Its combination of street-style obstacles and a surf skate area is designed to make it a new reference point for enthusiasts from Torremolinos and the wider Costa del Sol.
