Málaga Film Festival 2027 Unveils a Poster Featuring Lola Flores and Carlos Saura
The 30th Málaga Film Festival will take place from 26 February to 7 March 2027. Its official poster is based on a photograph of Lola Flores taken by Carlos Saura during the filming of Sevillanas, with an artistic intervention by Málaga-born artist Javier Calleja.
Málaga Film Festival Celebrates Its 30th Edition
Málaga Film Festival will celebrate three decades promoting Spanish and Latin American cinema in 2027.
The event will run from Friday 26 February to Sunday 7 March, once again bringing filmmakers, actors, industry professionals and cinema audiences to the city.
Its new visual identity connects cinema, flamenco, photography and contemporary art through the work of Carlos Saura, Lola Flores and Javier Calleja. Al Sol de la Costa
Lola Flores Takes Centre Stage
The poster’s central image comes from a photograph of Lola Flores taken by Carlos Saura during the production of his 1992 film Sevillanas.
The portrait captures the performer in motion and reflects the flamenco, freedom and powerful stage presence that defined her career.
By bringing Lola Flores and Carlos Saura together, the poster pays tribute to two influential figures who helped carry Spanish culture to international audiences.
Photography and Painting in a Single Artwork
The design is based on a limited-edition work entitled Lola Flores, Sevillanas 1992, which Saura finished by hand.
The original collection, released in 2021, comprised 85 pieces: 70 numbered reproductions and 15 works known as fotosaurios. These combined Saura’s photography with painted elements.
The artwork selected for the poster belongs to the series of 15 individually altered pieces. It was donated to the Festival during its previous edition, when Anna Saura presented her documentary Carlos Saura. That Child from the Photograph.
Javier Calleja Adds a Contemporary Perspective
The transformation of Saura’s artwork into the 2027 poster originated with Mármol&Fa, the cultural project led by Alicia Gutiérrez Mármol, and includes an artistic intervention by Javier Calleja.
The Málaga-born artist adds a contemporary perspective while preserving the essence of Saura’s original work.
Calleja also designed the poster for the Festival’s 20th edition. His return ten editions later creates a visual connection between two major anniversaries.
Carlos Saura’s Handwriting Becomes Part of the Poster
The main typography reproduces Carlos Saura’s own handwriting, turning his personal penmanship into another component of the artwork.
Its spontaneous lines complement the energetic image of Lola Flores and a palette dominated by blue, black and white.
The poster therefore preserves not only Saura’s photography and painting but also a further trace of his creative identity.
The Málaga Accent Returns
The design brings back the distinctive graphic accent that Javier Calleja introduced above the word Málaga for the Festival’s 20th anniversary.
Known locally as the “boquerón accent”, the detail pays tribute to Málaga’s identity and reconnects the 2027 design with an earlier chapter in the Festival’s visual history.
Ten Days of Spanish and Latin American Cinema
The complete programme has not yet been announced, but the 30th edition will feature feature films, documentaries, shorts, series and gastronomic productions within the Cinema Cocina section.
The official competition will award two Golden Biznagas: one for the best Spanish film and another for the best Latin American production. Other sections include ZonaZine and América, América, which highlights the cultural diversity of indigenous and rural communities across the Americas.
The Festival’s industry programme, MAFIZ, will also bring international film professionals to Málaga. Spanish Screenings Content will run from 2 to 4 March, while Málaga Work in Progress is scheduled for 3 to 5 March 2027.
