Marbella upgrades Lorenzo Morito Romero Avenue in San Pedro Alcántara with new pavements, lighting and resurfacing
The works cover 1.2 kilometres of one of the main links between the Ronda road, La Quinta and central San Pedro Alcántara. The project also includes new measures to improve pedestrian and road safety.
Lorenzo Morito Romero Avenue, one of the main access roads into San Pedro Alcántara from La Quinta and the Ronda road, is entering the final stage of a major upgrade designed to improve mobility, accessibility and road safety.
Marbella Town Hall is carrying out work along approximately 1.2 kilometres, including new pavements, street lighting, utility ducts and resurfacing.
The project aims to address several long-standing shortcomings, especially for pedestrians, while modernising a road that carries a significant amount of daily traffic.
More than 2,000 square metres of new pavement
One of the main objectives is to make walking along the avenue easier and safer.
The works include the construction of 2,100 square metres of new pavement, improving pedestrian continuity along the route.
The new layout will provide more suitable walking areas and improve connections between nearby residential developments and other parts of the area.
This is particularly important on a road where pedestrian accessibility had previously been limited in some sections.
6,500 square metres of resurfacing
The project also includes a major intervention on the road surface.
Around 6,500 square metres of carriageway will be resurfaced, using approximately 800 tonnes of asphalt.
The aim is to improve driving conditions along a road used by both local residents and motorists travelling from Nueva Andalucía and nearby areas.
The avenue acts as an important connection between San Pedro Alcántara, the Ronda road and La Quinta.
New LED street lighting
Lighting is another key part of the project.
The avenue will receive a new LED lighting system, designed to improve visibility at night and increase energy efficiency.
The works include around 1,150 linear metres of new lighting ducts.
Improved lighting is directly linked to one of the project’s main goals: making the road safer for both drivers and pedestrians.
New telecommunications infrastructure
The renovation is also being used to install new underground service infrastructure.
The project includes around 660 metres of telecommunications ducts.
These installations will modernise existing networks and prepare the area for future technological requirements.
The works therefore go beyond visible improvements and also include infrastructure beneath the public space.
Measures to reduce vehicle speeds
Road safety will play an important role in the new design of Lorenzo Morito Romero Avenue.
The project includes measures aimed at reducing vehicle speeds and making it easier for pedestrians to cross.
The intention is to make the avenue safer for people on foot rather than allowing it to function only as a through-road for vehicles.
These measures will be combined with updated road markings and other modifications along the route.
Drainage improvements
The works also include improvements to the drainage system.
Efficient water drainage is particularly important on roads with changes in level or sections close to slopes, where periods of heavy rain can cause water accumulation or runoff.
The upgrades are intended to reinforce specific points along the avenue and reduce potential problems linked to stormwater.
These works form part of the wider renovation of the road.
New safety barrier beside the slope
In the section close to the slope towards the AP-7 motorway, the Town Hall will install approximately 195 metres of safety barrier.
The measure is intended to improve protection along one of the more sensitive parts of the route.
Roadside barriers are designed to reduce the consequences of vehicles leaving the carriageway and are particularly relevant where there is a significant drop or slope.
The installation forms part of the wider package of road safety improvements.
40 new road signs
The project will be completed with a full update of road signage.
A total of 40 new vertical signs will be installed, alongside renewed road markings.
Lane markings, pedestrian crossings and traffic signs will be adapted to the avenue’s new layout once the construction work is complete.
This will be one of the final stages before the project is officially finished.
An important connection between San Pedro and La Quinta
Lorenzo Morito Romero Avenue plays an important role in local mobility.
It connects the area around the Ronda road and La Quinta with San Pedro Alcántara and is also used by residents travelling from areas close to Nueva Andalucía.
As a result, traffic can be heavy at certain times of the day.
The renovation is designed to improve conditions on a road that serves as a regular access route for both local residents and drivers travelling through the municipality.
Traffic remains open during the works
One of the notable aspects of the project is that traffic has remained open throughout the works.
The different construction phases have been organised to allow vehicles to continue using the road while pavement, utility and resurfacing work is carried out.
This has kept the connection between surrounding areas open, although temporary traffic changes may still occur while the remaining work is completed.
The project is now in its final stage.
Completion expected in the coming weeks
Marbella Town Hall expects the works to be completed in the coming weeks.
The schedule has been affected by factors such as rainfall and the summer period.
The current municipal forecast is for the upgraded avenue to be fully completed during November 2026.
Once finished, the road will have a renewed layout and updated infrastructure for pedestrians, traffic and municipal services.
A comprehensive upgrade to one of San Pedro Alcántara’s main access routes
The Lorenzo Morito Romero project is about much more than resurfacing a road.
It combines new pavements, LED lighting, telecommunications infrastructure, drainage, road safety measures, protective barriers and updated signage, addressing several different needs along the route.
At 1.2 kilometres long, the avenue will have a more complete layout designed to better serve residents and drivers on a daily basis.
The project will also improve one of the main connections between San Pedro Alcántara, La Quinta and the Ronda road.
