More Than Half a Century in Central Málaga

Lo Güeno has formed part of Málaga’s culinary history for almost six decades. José Puerto Galveño and Francisco Ríos founded the restaurant on 18 February 1967 in a small premises on Calle Marín García, just a short distance from Calle Larios.

The early period was not easy and José Puerto became the sole owner only a few months after the opening. At that time, the establishment occupied approximately 60 square metres, with a narrow bar taking up much of the available space.

The business expanded over the years without leaving its original location. A new dining room opened on the same street in 2002, followed by a second restaurant on Calle Strachan, between Calle Larios and Málaga Cathedral, in 2010.

Tapas and Traditional Recipes

Lo Güeno’s food is based on familiar dishes from Málaga, Andalusian and Spanish cuisine. Customers can eat at the bar, share portions or enjoy a more complete meal in its dining rooms and outdoor seating areas.

Its specialities include Iberian ham, Manchego cheese, flamenquines, baby broad beans with ham, asparagus and egg dishes and several preparations of cod.

The menu also features stews such as Andalusian-style tripe and large white beans with clams, together with house recipes including a large meatball served in an Iberian ham sauce. Rice dishes, salads, fried food and other traditional recipes complete the selection.

Charcoal-Grilled Meat on Calle Strachan

The Calle Strachan restaurant has developed a menu with a particular focus on charcoal-grilled meat. Options include beef fillet, ribeye steak, Iberian pork secreto, Iberian lagarto and suckling pig.

The restaurant has a terrace, bar and comfortable indoor dining room decorated with works by Málaga artists. Its location between Calle Larios and the Cathedral makes it easily accessible to visitors exploring the historic centre.

The menu retains the identity of the original restaurant while offering a broader selection of meat, fish and rice dishes alongside its traditional tapas.

Tapas with International Recognition

The bar has been one of Lo Güeno’s defining features since its earliest years. The restaurant helped establish a style of dining based on sampling small portions of different dishes, accompanied by wine or beer and shared in an informal atmosphere.

This approach received international recognition in 1977, when the American magazine Newsweek described Lo Güeno as a place where tapas were turned into an art form.

Following José Puerto Galveño’s death in 1998, his daughter Lidia Puerto Vadillo took over the business, supported by Mariano Reche Plaza. The family has preserved a traditional approach and the personal service associated with Málaga’s historic tapas bars.

Locations, Opening Hours and Reservations

The original restaurant is located at 9 Calle Marín García, while the second venue can be found at 12 Calle Strachan.

Both restaurants open from Monday to Sunday between noon and midnight. Reservations can be made online or by telephone, although eating at the bar remains one of the most characteristic ways to discover its tapas.
