An Awaited Reopening in the Historic Centre

El Diamante is preparing to return to central Málaga. If the current schedule is maintained, the venue will reopen during the first half of October, although a specific date has not yet been announced.

The café will remain at its location on Calle Pozos Dulces and begin a new chapter under the management of Rafael López Taza. It will adopt the name El Diamante Taberna del Taza while preserving the identity that has made it one of the area’s most recognisable bars.

Traditional Breakfasts and Lunchtime Service

Breakfast will continue to be one of the establishment’s main attractions. The menu will bring back products closely connected to its history, including strawberry milk and the small Málaga salchichón sandwich served with butter.

The main change will be its extended opening hours. During its final period, El Diamante only opened in the mornings, but the new manager intends to restore lunchtime service.

The menu will also include tapas, wine and beer, with priority given to products from Málaga and the rest of Andalusia.

More Than Seven Decades of History

The business dates back to 1949, when José Gálvez Toro and Aurora Toro Alcaide opened a small bar called El Brillante on Calle Compañía.

It later moved to Calle Pozos Dulces and was renamed El Diamante. Its breakfasts, tapas and friendly relationship with customers subsequently turned it into a regular meeting place for several generations of Málaga residents.

Francis Cerezo and Mariví Castillo managed the business for more than three decades. They stepped away for health reasons, although they expressed their wish for the café to remain open and retain its original character.

A Project Connected to Family History

Rafael López Taza’s arrival also has a personal connection to the café. His paternal grandfather once worked as a waiter at El Diamante, while his mother’s family was born on Calle Pozos Dulces itself.

The name Taberna del Taza therefore pays tribute to his family and refers to the nickname by which the new manager is known in Málaga.

The reopening will revive one of the historic centre’s traditional establishments, adapting it for a new chapter without abandoning familiar products such as its small sandwiches and strawberry milk.
