Antequera Centro health centre to reopen in 2027 with 27 consulting rooms and new services

More than fifteen years after closing as a health centre, the Campillo Bajo building is beginning to take shape ahead of its return to healthcare use. Antequera is set to recover these facilities through a major refurbishment project that will provide 27 consulting rooms in the town centre and expand the range of services available to patients.

The project represents an investment of around €2.8 million and is currently approximately 20% complete. According to the latest timetable announced during an official visit to the site, the centre is expected to open in the summer of 2027, provided the works continue without delays.

The project goes beyond simply renovating the former building. The new layout will expand the range of healthcare services and once again provide dedicated premises for the Antequera Centro clinical management unit.

27 consulting rooms for adults and children

The new health centre will have more than 2,000 square metres spread across four floors, allowing the different services to be organised across a much larger space.

One of the main changes will be the number of consulting rooms. The project includes a total of 27, divided into:

• 22 consulting rooms for adults
• 5 paediatric consulting rooms

There will also be areas for minor surgery, separate waiting areas for adults and children, a breastfeeding room, a library and teaching room, as well as facilities for social work, community nursing and patient services.

The layout of the new centre had already been included in the project put out to tender by the Andalusian Regional Government in 2025.

Physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy

The increase in space will also be accompanied by a broader range of services than those previously available at the old health centre.

Among the most significant additions are physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy, three services that were not previously provided at these facilities.

The centre will also include areas for radiology, blood tests and minor surgery, increasing the number of healthcare needs that can be dealt with in primary care without having to redirect patients elsewhere in Antequera.

During the visit on 24 September, the Andalusian Government delegate in Málaga, Patricia Navarro, highlighted the increase in both space and healthcare provision that the refurbishment will bring.

The new layout is already starting to take shape

Although a large part of the project still remains to be completed, several important stages of the renovation have already been carried out.

The works have included interior demolition and the removal of old materials from the building, including the fibre-cement roof. Fire protection measures have also been completed throughout the structure, alongside work on the new building systems.

Electrical and plumbing installations have already been completed, while progress on interior finishes is making it possible to begin seeing how some of the future rooms will be distributed.

The contract includes a 12-month construction period, although the latest forecast places the actual opening of the centre in the summer of 2027.

Antequera Centro and Antequera Estación will once again have separate facilities

The reopening of Campillo Bajo will also change the current organisation of primary healthcare in Antequera.

While the former health centre has remained closed, the Antequera Centro and Antequera Estación clinical management units have shared facilities. Once the refurbished building opens, both will once again have separate premises.

This will not mean the closure of the Antequera Estación health centre. The Andalusian Regional Government has stressed that the facility will remain open and retain its existing services, although some healthcare services will continue to be shared between the two units.

The new structure is therefore intended to increase healthcare capacity in the town rather than replace one health centre with another.

Campillo Bajo regained its out-of-hours emergency service in 2022

The reopening of the health centre forms part of a wider process that began several years earlier.

Part of the Campillo Bajo building returned to healthcare use in 2022, when the out-of-hours emergency service reopened there.

That first phase represented an investment of around €600,000 and involved the refurbishment of approximately 445 square metres of indoor space, as well as around 167 square metres outside.

The reopening of the emergency service was effectively the first stage in the recovery of healthcare activity at the building. The current project is a much larger second phase aimed at restoring the health centre itself.

According to figures presented during the latest institutional visit, this emergency facility currently sees more than 30,000 patients each year and also helps reduce pressure on the emergency department at Antequera Hospital.

A project planned years before construction began

The recovery of the Campillo Bajo health centre is not a project that began in 2026.

The Andalusian Regional Government announced in February 2023 an investment of more than €2.6 million to restore Antequera’s central health centre. At that stage, many of the features later included in the final project had already been outlined, including the adult and paediatric consulting rooms.

In July 2025, the works were later put out to tender with a base budget of €2,899,352.73 and a planned 12-month construction period. The project is financed with ERDF funds from the 2021-2027 European funding framework.

In February 2026, the works were finally awarded for €2,656,796.34 to Bilba Construcción e Infraestructuras SLU.

With around a fifth of the renovation now complete, the former health centre is beginning to reach the stage where its new layout can already be seen.

If the current schedule is maintained, Antequera Centro will once again have its own health centre in 2027, with more space than before and services that were not previously available at these facilities.
