Carla Hayes, Her Mixed-Race Art Makes a Space in the Art Scene

Carla Hayes takes her place in the art scene with her mixed-race art. The artist from Malaga, of Spanish mother and Ghanaian father, seeks her own space within the African diaspora through works like 'This Sea Called My Back', her second solo exhibition in Malaga, which can be seen at La Térmica until February 22. In this exhibition, Hayes makes the black body visible along with all its historical burden, a constant in her career.

Since graduating with a degree in Fine Arts from the UMA in 2019, her work is permeated by her mixed identity both in the depth of her themes and also in the form of her art, with the use of raffia mixed with embroidery and, in this latest exhibition, also with plastic and ceramics. These materials and artisanal techniques speak of her condition as an Afro-descendant woman and, filtered through her discourse, are elevated to the category of art. Through them, the artist explores colonialism, the sexualization of the black woman, migration, and ecological damage. At La Térmica, Hayes focuses on the sea as a "third space or common place" of that diaspora. A meeting point between "a here and a there", between Africa and Europe, and a scene of tragedies where thousands of migrants lose their lives.
