Mijas expands accessible parking near its beaches with three new spaces for people with reduced mobility
The council has introduced additional designated parking spaces at Las Doradas and El Chaparral, bringing the total along the coastline to 25. Four beaches in the municipality also offer assisted bathing services
Mijas is continuing to improve accessibility along its coastline with the introduction of three new parking spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility (PRM). The improvements have been carried out at two coastal locations: Las Doradas beach, where one new space has been created, and El Chaparral, which now has two additional designated spaces.
With these additions, the municipality has reached 25 accessible parking spaces along its beachfront, distributed across approximately 14 kilometres of coastline. The initiative aims to make beach access easier for residents and visitors who experience mobility difficulties.
Daniel Gómez, Mijas councillor responsible for Beaches and Operational Services, explained that the work responds to users' needs and forms part of the council's ongoing efforts to remove physical barriers from public spaces.
New accessible parking spaces at Las Doradas and El Chaparral
The three parking spaces have been created near Las Doradas and El Chaparral beaches, two areas that have recently benefited from improvements to their access routes and connections with the Senda Litoral coastal walkway.
The work is being carried out by the council's Operational Services team in coordination with the Beaches Department, using municipal resources.
According to Gómez, the project includes adapting the parking areas and installing appropriate vertical signage, with the remaining work expected to be completed during the first week of November.
Having designated parking spaces close to the beach is particularly important for wheelchair users, people who have difficulty walking and those who need to minimise the distance between their vehicle and pedestrian access points.
Accessible parking near the coastline helps improve independence and allows people with mobility difficulties to enjoy the beaches throughout the year, rather than only during the summer months.
Mijas has around 45 accessible parking spaces near its coastline
Although the latest additions bring the number of designated spaces directly along the beachfront to 25, the total is higher when parking facilities located slightly further inland are included.
As Gómez explained to Mijas Comunicación, the municipality also has approximately 20 accessible parking spaces in the second line of the coastal area, bringing the overall figure to around 45.
This distribution provides additional parking options for people with reduced mobility visiting the beaches of Mijas.
The improvements at Las Doradas and El Chaparral also complement recently completed sections of the Senda Litoral coastal walkway, helping connect pedestrian routes with beach access points.
The council considers these improvements essential to adapting coastal public spaces to the needs of residents and tourists, while supporting accessibility standards associated with beach quality certifications.
Four beaches in Mijas offer assisted bathing services
The expansion of accessible parking complements other measures already available along the Mijas coastline.
The municipality currently has four beaches equipped with adapted bathing facilities and assistance services for people with reduced mobility or disabilities.
These beaches are La Cala, El Bombo, Royal Beach-La Luna and El Chaparral.
The services are designed to help people who may require assistance or specialised equipment to access the sea and enjoy bathing.
These facilities contribute to making the coastline more inclusive, although their availability may depend on the season, operating hours and specific arrangements at each beach.
Visitors are therefore advised to contact Mijas Town Council in advance to confirm when assisted bathing services are available and whether any special arrangements are required.
Making the coastline more accessible throughout the year
Improving accessibility is one of the priorities behind the council's ongoing work along the municipality's beaches.
Demand for adapted facilities is not limited to the summer tourist season. The Mijas coastline attracts visitors throughout the year thanks to its mild climate and the large number of residents who regularly use its promenades and coastal public spaces.
In this context, accessible parking, suitable access routes and assisted bathing facilities help ensure that more people can enjoy the coastline comfortably and independently.
Mijas Town Council has stated that it will continue upgrading beach infrastructure and facilities to reduce accessibility barriers and encourage more inclusive use of public spaces.
The three new parking spaces at Las Doradas and El Chaparral strengthen Mijas' network of accessible coastal parking, complementing existing assisted bathing services and other improvements introduced along this stretch of the Costa del Sol.
