Mijas wants to extend its beach season to 11 months a year from 2027

Mijas wants to make greater use of its coastline almost all year round. The Town Hall has proposed extending the next 2027-2030 Beach Plan from eight to eleven months, a move that would allow tourism and leisure services along the coast to remain active for longer.

The proposed period would run from February to December, giving legal coverage to services such as sunbeds and parasols, authorised massage areas and certain water-based activities.

However, businesses would not be forced to stay open for the full eleven months. The aim is to create a wider legal framework for those operators that choose to extend their season.

A beach season that could begin in February

At present, the Beach Plan covers eight months of the year. The new proposal would add three more months and bring Mijas closer to an almost year-round coastal model.

The move reflects the reality of tourism on the Costa del Sol, where the climate allows beaches to remain attractive well beyond July and August.

For Mijas, a longer season would also mean more services for residents and visitors during months that have traditionally been considered low season.

The proposal was presented to coastal business owners during a meeting held in La Cala de Mijas.

Businesses would not have to open for eleven months

One of the key points is that the extended period would remain optional for individual operators.

The new framework would allow businesses to operate from February to December, but each company would continue to decide how long it wants to remain open.

In other words, the eleven-month period would be a maximum operating window rather than a compulsory opening schedule.

This could make it easier for some services to take advantage of spring and autumn, when weather conditions and visitor numbers may still support coastal activity.

Sunbeds, espetos, massages and water sports

The future Beach Plan would retain most of the services currently available along the Mijas coastline.

The proposal includes 26 areas for sunbeds and parasols, as well as 17 espeto facilities linked to beach restaurants and 14 authorised massage tents.

There would also continue to be 17 public toilets and five accessible beaches for people with disabilities or reduced mobility.

The water sports offer includes three designated activity zones, one of them municipally managed at La Cala beach, as well as seven nautical channels. One of these, at El Chaparral, is specifically set aside for kitesurfing.

Two new terraces for beach restaurants

The draft plan also includes two additional terraces linked to beach restaurants.

Their inclusion is intended to ensure that the necessary authorisation from the coastal authorities can be processed within the new Beach Plan.

Another change is planned for the children’s leisure area in La Cala. The current ‘jumping’ attraction in Plaza del Torreón is expected to move to the area beside the playground behind Chiringuito Arroyo.

The aim is to ease pressure on the beach access point and bring children’s activities together in one area.

When could the new plan come into force?

For now, the proposal is still in the consultation and drafting stage.

The Town Hall and local business representatives have set 30 September as the deadline to agree the final text of the 2027-2030 Beach Plan.

Once agreed, it will be sent to the Andalusian Regional Government for approval through the department responsible for sustainability and the environment.

If the proposal is approved, Mijas could enter 2027 with a much longer beach-services season, reflecting a Costa del Sol where tourism and outdoor life by the Mediterranean are becoming increasingly less seasonal.

The plan could therefore make it possible to enjoy more beach services in Mijas from February through to December, extending activity well beyond the traditional summer months.
