DANA brings rain warnings to Málaga this weekend, with Ronda and Antequera on yellow alert
AEMET has issued yellow warnings for inland Málaga on Saturday 17 October, while rain is also expected elsewhere across the province and temperatures will fall noticeably on Sunday.
Málaga is preparing for a significant change in the weather this weekend. After several days of unusually warm temperatures for mid-October, the arrival of a DANA is expected to increase atmospheric instability and bring rain and thunderstorms to much of the province.
Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, has issued yellow weather warnings for tomorrow, Saturday 17 October, in the Ronda and Antequera areas, where the heaviest rainfall is expected.
Rain is also forecast elsewhere in Málaga province, although for now the Costa del Sol, Axarquía and Sol y Guadalhorce areas are not included in the initial warnings.
Ronda and Antequera on yellow alert this Saturday
The areas expected to see the most significant weather conditions this weekend are Ronda and Antequera.
AEMET has issued yellow warnings for both rain and thunderstorms on Saturday.
The warnings will begin at 12:00 pm and remain active until midnight, with rainfall accumulations of up to 20 litres per square metre in one hour possible.
The rain may also be accompanied by thunderstorms and could become locally intense.
For now, these are the only active weather warnings in Málaga province for this episode.
Friday will still be relatively warm and settled
Before the most unstable part of the weather system arrives, Friday 16 October is expected to remain relatively calm across much of Málaga.
In the city, skies are forecast to remain mostly clear or partly cloudy, with temperatures potentially reaching around 29°C.
Inland areas will also remain warm for the time of year, with highs of around 26°C in Ronda and 27°C in Antequera.
Cloud cover is expected to increase later in the day, with some light rain possible, particularly towards the western part of the province.
Rain becomes more likely on Saturday
The clearest change will arrive tomorrow.
The probability of rain will increase throughout Saturday, particularly during the second half of the day.
In Ronda, AEMET forecasts that the chance of rain could reach 100% during the afternoon, while Antequera is also expected to see a very high probability of precipitation.
Málaga city is also likely to see rain later on Saturday, although no warning is currently in place there.
Conditions may vary considerably from one municipality to another, as showers associated with this type of weather can be highly irregular.
Will it rain in Málaga city and on the Costa del Sol?
Rain is also expected in these areas, although conditions are forecast to be less severe than inland.
For Málaga city, AEMET shows a clear increase in the likelihood of rain during Saturday, particularly from the afternoon onwards.
Along the Costa del Sol, cloud cover is also expected to increase, with showers possible as the DANA affects southern Spain.
Anyone with outdoor plans this weekend should therefore check the latest forecast before heading out.
Temperatures will drop on Sunday
The other major change this weekend will be the fall in temperatures.
After a Friday when Málaga city could still reach around 29°C, Sunday’s high is expected to fall to approximately 23°C.
The change will be even more noticeable inland.
Ronda is forecast to reach highs of around 21°C, while Antequera could remain at around 22°C to 23°C.
This will mark a clear shift away from the almost summer-like conditions experienced in recent days.
Nights will also become cooler
The temperature drop will not only affect daytime highs.
Minimum temperatures are also expected to fall during the weekend.
In inland areas, overnight lows could be around 13°C to 14°C, particularly in Ronda and Antequera.
Coastal areas will remain somewhat milder, although temperatures there are also expected to fall below recent levels.
The change will finally bring conditions that feel much more typical of mid-October.
Sunday could also be wet across much of Málaga
The unsettled weather is not expected to disappear after Saturday.
AEMET continues to show a high probability of rain on Sunday 18 October.
In Málaga city, the forecast even includes the possibility of thunderstorms during part of the day.
Ronda continues to show a very high chance of rain, while Antequera is also expected to see cloudy skies, showers and possible thunderstorms.
So although the yellow warnings are initially focused on Saturday, Sunday is also expected to remain unsettled.
DANA could continue to affect Málaga next week
The instability may not end with the weekend.
Current forecasts suggest that the effects of the DANA could continue into the first part of next week.
Rain remains possible on Monday and Tuesday, although its intensity will depend on the final position and development of the system.
These weather situations can be difficult to forecast several days in advance, as small changes in trajectory can significantly affect where the heaviest rain falls.
What is a DANA?
DANA stands for Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos, or an isolated high-altitude low-pressure system.
It occurs when a pocket of cold air becomes separated at high levels of the atmosphere and interacts with warmer, more humid air below.
Under certain conditions, this can create significant atmospheric instability.
However, not every DANA results in torrential rain.
The intensity and location of rainfall depend on several factors, including the position of the system, available moisture and wind patterns.
What does an AEMET yellow warning mean?
A yellow warning indicates weather conditions that can create a low level of danger, particularly for certain activities or vulnerable locations.
It does not necessarily mean a widespread emergency is expected.
However, people are advised to follow weather updates and take extra care during outdoor activities, road journeys or when travelling through areas prone to flooding.
For this episode, the main focus is on inland Málaga during Saturday.
Take care on roads and in flood-prone areas
Heavy rain over a short period can quickly affect secondary roads, underpasses and riverbeds.
In rural areas such as the Serranía de Ronda or Antequera, visibility can also decrease and road conditions may deteriorate.
General advice includes avoiding flooded roads or river crossings and always following instructions from emergency services and local authorities.
A weekend to reconsider outdoor plans
The forecast coincides with a busy weekend of events across Málaga province.
Fairs, sporting competitions, markets, cultural activities and other outdoor events are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
Rain does not necessarily mean events will be cancelled, but schedules may change or activities could be moved.
It is therefore advisable to check the official websites or social media pages of individual events before travelling.
From almost summer weather to autumn in just two days
The change will be particularly noticeable after the unusually warm weather experienced this week.
Málaga has seen high temperatures for mid-October, with values close to 30°C in some areas.
The arrival of the DANA will temporarily bring that spell to an end.
Between Friday and Sunday, some locations could see daytime temperatures fall by more than five degrees, while rain once again becomes a major feature of the forecast.
Málaga weekend weather at a glance
Friday 16 October: Still relatively warm and settled, with increasing cloud and the possibility of some light rain later in the day.
Saturday 17 October: Much more unsettled, with rain across much of the province and yellow warnings in Ronda and Antequera for heavy rain and thunderstorms.
Sunday 18 October: Showers and possible thunderstorms remain likely, with a clear drop in temperatures across Málaga province.
The situation is still developing, so AEMET may update or extend its warnings over the coming hours.
