Marbella and Estepona gain a new connection to Barcelona with a single bus-and-high-speed-train ticket

Travelling from Marbella or Estepona to northern Spain is becoming easier, even though neither municipality has a direct rail connection. The expanded partnership between Renfe and Avanza strengthens the Tren+Bus model, which combines coach and high-speed train travel under a single ticket, using Málaga as the main interchange point.

The system allows passengers to include the road journey from the Costa del Sol and the onward rail journey in a single booking, avoiding the need to purchase both legs separately.

The latest expansion announced by Renfe adds destinations in north-eastern Spain such as Barcelona, Camp de Tarragona, Lleida and Zaragoza, reinforcing a network that has connected Marbella and Estepona to high-speed rail via Málaga for years.

How Tren+Bus works from Marbella and Estepona

The system is relatively straightforward.

Passengers begin their journey on an Avanza coach from Marbella or Estepona to Málaga. Once in the city, they transfer to the corresponding train service for the long-distance leg of the journey.

The main difference compared with arranging the trip independently is that Tren+Bus is designed as a combined ticket, integrating the different stages into a single purchase.

Renfe has maintained an agreement with Avanza since 2013 to connect Marbella and Estepona with the national rail network via Málaga, using high-speed trains and coach services.

This type of intermodal connection is particularly important on the western Costa del Sol, where major residential and tourist destinations such as Marbella and Estepona still do not have a railway station.

Barcelona, Tarragona, Lleida and Zaragoza gain stronger links

The latest Tren+Bus expansion focuses particularly on improving connections between southern and north-eastern Spain.

Renfe and Avanza have added new travel options to Barcelona, Camp de Tarragona, Lleida and Zaragoza, using Málaga as the interchange between coach and high-speed rail.

Renfe presents the system as a way of extending the reach of the high-speed network to places without direct rail infrastructure.

For residents of Marbella or Estepona, this means a long-distance journey can begin at the local coach station and be managed under one booking.

One ticket instead of arranging two separate journeys

This is probably the most useful aspect for passengers.

Traditionally, someone travelling from Marbella to a city served by high-speed rail had to find a coach to Málaga, calculate enough time for the transfer and then separately buy the rail ticket.

The Tren+Bus system is designed to simplify that process.

Combined tickets can be purchased through Renfe.com, station ticket offices, sales offices, travel agencies and Renfe’s telephone sales service.

Any change or cancellation applies to the full combined ticket, although the specific conditions depend on the rail fare purchased.

What luggage can passengers take?

Travellers using this option should also be aware of specific luggage rules.

Renfe allows up to three pieces of hand luggage, provided the total weight does not exceed 25 kilos and the overall dimensions remain within the company’s limits.

However, the Tren+Bus combined ticket does not allow bicycles or scooters.

Pets are also not permitted under this type of combined ticket, an important point for foreign residents and second-home owners who regularly travel with animals.

An alternative for two cities without rail stations

The improved service once again highlights one of the defining mobility issues on the western Costa del Sol.

Marbella and Estepona have large resident populations, major hotel capacity and strong tourism activity, but long-distance rail travel still depends on road connections with Málaga.

That means combined coach and high-speed rail travel is useful not only for tourists.

It can also serve residents travelling for work, students, second-home owners, international visitors and people who regularly need to reach other Spanish cities.

In practical terms, the system extends the reach of Málaga María Zambrano station to municipalities that are not directly connected to the rail network.

Renfe and Avanza expand intermodal travel in southern Spain

The strategy goes beyond Marbella and Estepona.

Renfe and Avanza have also expanded combined services during 2026 towards Algeciras and Gibraltar/La Línea, strengthening road-and-rail connections between Málaga, the Costa del Sol and the Campo de Gibraltar.

The latest timetable includes daily services towards Barcelona from the Campo de Gibraltar, as well as links with Tarragona, Lleida and Zaragoza.

Renfe stresses that combining high-speed rail and coach services makes it possible to reach areas without direct train infrastructure while planning the full trip in a single transaction.

More travel options for Costa del Sol residents

For Marbella and Estepona, any improvement in long-distance transport options is especially relevant.

Both municipalities have large international communities and receive visitors throughout the year, so connections with major Spanish cities are important not only for tourism but also for everyday quality of life.

Combining coach and high-speed rail under one system reduces some of the complexity of living in a municipality without a railway station.

And although passengers still need to change in Málaga, Tren+Bus allows the whole journey to be planned as a single trip from the point of origin.
