Málaga heads into early October with strong hotel demand driven by Comic-Con and the San Miguel Fair

Summer may be over, but hotels in Málaga and along the Costa del Sol are still facing several very busy weeks. A run of major events between the end of September and the beginning of October is keeping demand for accommodation high in Málaga city and nearby destinations such as Torremolinos and Benalmádena.

Two events are largely responsible for this movement. The first is the San Miguel Fair in Torremolinos, which runs from 25 to 29 September. Just two days later, Málaga city will host the second edition of San Diego Comic-Con Málaga, taking place from 1 to 4 October at FYCMA.

The result is almost a week and a half of major events in quick succession, generating hotel bookings and extra demand for restaurants, transport, shops and other tourism services.

Comic-Con puts Málaga back on the international events map

San Diego Comic-Con Málaga 2026 is set to be one of the biggest events on the city’s autumn calendar.

The convention returns from 1 to 4 October with more than 300 hours of programming dedicated to film, television, comics, anime, gaming, cosplay and other areas of pop culture.

Its impact goes far beyond FYCMA itself.

Thousands of attendees need accommodation, transport and food during their stay, spreading economic activity across central Málaga and into nearby Costa del Sol municipalities with good transport connections.

The organisers themselves have highlighted how the event affects not only the convention centre, but also hotels, restaurants, shops and city streets, linking entertainment and tourism with the wider local economy.

Torremolinos closes September with the San Miguel Fair

Before Comic-Con begins, one of the Costa del Sol’s biggest tourist destinations will be celebrating its main annual fair.

The San Miguel Fair runs from 25 to 29 September, with daytime celebrations in central Torremolinos and evening activity at the fairground.

Live music, marquees, food, family activities and fairground rides are expected to generate significant visitor numbers during the final days of the month.

The proximity between Torremolinos and Málaga also means the demand generated by the two events is not entirely separate.

Visitors who cannot find accommodation close to their chosen event may look for alternatives in other nearby municipalities, particularly those with good Cercanías rail and road connections.

September hotel occupancy is close to 90%

Figures from the hotel sector help explain the wider context.

The Costa del Sol Hotel Association, AEHCOS, estimates average hotel occupancy of 88.58% across Málaga province in September.

Torremolinos is among the destinations with the highest forecast occupancy, at around 93%, while Málaga city stands at approximately 91.2%. Marbella is expected to reach 89.24%, with Benalmádena at 89.56%.

These are particularly high levels for a month that traditionally marks the transition from peak summer into autumn.

October also begins with strong expectations

The arrival of October does not bring an immediate drop in activity.

AEHCOS expects average occupancy across the province to remain above 83% during the month, with Benalmádena at 89.9%, Marbella at 84.2%, Málaga city at 83.4% and Mijas at 80.7%.

These figures apply to the month as a whole rather than specifically to Comic-Con dates, meaning pressure on room availability may be significantly higher during the event itself.

This is where major events have their strongest effect: they can concentrate bookings into a few days even when the monthly average is lower.

Major events are helping extend the tourism season

The trend also has a broader significance for the Costa del Sol.

For decades, one of the main challenges facing Mediterranean holiday destinations has been reducing their dependence on July and August. Málaga has gradually built a calendar of congresses, fairs, cultural events, sporting competitions and major international events that generate visitor demand in spring, autumn and even winter.

The hotel sector has repeatedly stressed the importance of spreading demand more evenly throughout the year, with major events seen as a key tool for reducing seasonality.

The sequence between the San Miguel Fair and Comic-Con is a clear example: when September ends, demand does not disappear, but instead moves directly into one of Málaga’s biggest international events.

Hotels are not the only businesses to benefit

The economic impact goes beyond accommodation.

Visitors travelling for Comic-Con or the San Miguel Fair also spend money on restaurants, taxis, public transport, shops, parking and other local services, widening the economic effect across the destination.

For Málaga city, Comic-Con also helps strengthen a tourism identity beyond the traditional sun-and-beach model, linking the destination with pop culture, creative industries and entertainment.

Torremolinos, meanwhile, combines its usual tourism activity with a major local celebration that attracts both residents and visitors.

An especially busy week for Costa del Sol tourism

Between 25 September and 4 October, Málaga and the Costa del Sol will therefore host two major visitor draws in quick succession.

The San Miguel Fair will dominate the final days of September, followed almost immediately by thousands of fans travelling to FYCMA for San Diego Comic-Con Málaga.
