Rincón de la Victoria Opens a New Park Covering Almost 30,000 Square Metres

Rincón de la Victoria has opened the first phase of Parque del Mediterráneo, a new green space designed for leisure, sport and community life.

The park covers almost 30,000 square metres and has required a total investment of €4.69 million, including €1 million provided by Málaga Provincial Council.

Now the largest park in the municipality, it aims to connect the urban environment with nature while offering facilities for families, athletes, older residents and pet owners.

A Lake, Children’s Areas and Sports Facilities

One of the park’s main features is a 3,500-square-metre lake, maintained using an ultraviolet water-treatment system.

It also includes a 2,500-square-metre children’s area with a ten-metre-high play tower, the tallest children’s structure in the municipality.

Other facilities include a cycling and skate circuit designed by BMX world champion Rubén Alcántara, a pétanque area, outdoor fitness equipment, a viewpoint and a 1,000-square-metre circular multipurpose plaza.

The park also offers 4,725 square metres of pedestrian paths, an external cycle lane, a kiosk and picnic area, two ornamental fountains and six drinking-water fountains, including two adapted for dogs.

More Than 10,000 Plants and Almost 700 Trees

Vegetation is one of the central elements of the project. A total of 10,494 trees, shrubs and flowering plants have been added, together with 5,062 square metres of lawns and meadows.

The park contains 687 trees, including 80 transplanted specimens and 607 newly planted ones. Mediterranean species include holm oaks, olive trees, almond trees, hackberries, lavender, rosemary and esparto grass.

Two large bottle trees also stand out. They are estimated to be around 500 years old, weigh more than 6,000 kilograms and reach a height of 5.5 metres.

Six Ginkgo biloba trees have also been planted. This Asian species is often described as a living fossil.

Shaded Areas for the Summer Months

Parque del Mediterráneo provides 1,277 square metres of shade through awnings and pergolas, not including the shade that will eventually be created by the growing trees.

The park contains almost 250 benches spread across approximately 450 linear metres, along with 52 litter bins.

An old irrigation reservoir found on the site has also been restored and incorporated into the park as part of the area’s local ethnological heritage.

A Second Phase Three Times Larger

The project will continue with a second phase that will significantly increase the park’s total size.

The future extension will cover 96,620 square metres, more than three times the area already opened, and will have an initial tender budget of €8.4 million.

The first phase required an investment of €4,699,261. Málaga Provincial Council contributed €1 million, while the European Union is expected to finance 85% of the investment covering both phases and the Cortijo de Locea project, where a Blue Economy Hub is planned.

Parque del Mediterráneo Opening Hours

The park will operate on different schedules depending on the season:

Summer opening hours: 7:00 a.m. to midnight
Winter opening hours: 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

The site will have night-time security and a daily team of seven workers responsible for maintenance and the care of its green areas.
