More Than 500 Rowers to Compete in Rincón de la Victoria’s Provincial Jábega League

Traditional jábega boats will once again bring colour and excitement to the coastline of Rincón de la Victoria on Saturday, June 27. The municipality will host the fifth Grand Prix of the Provincial Jábega League – Pepe Almoguera Cup, one of the most established events on Málaga’s summer nautical calendar.

More than 500 athletes from different clubs along the Costa del Sol are expected to take part. A total of 55 crews, divided into seven categories, will compete throughout the morning just off the local beach.

The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the first qualifying heats and is scheduled to finish at around 2:00 p.m., when the awards ceremony will take place at the boatyard next to El Tajo.

More Than 500 Rowers to Race Along the Rincón de la Victoria Coast

The Rincón de la Victoria Grand Prix forms part of the Provincial Jábega League, organised by the Traditional Rowing Association and sponsored by Málaga Provincial Council.

The high level of participation reflects the growth of a discipline that combines physical endurance, teamwork and a strong connection with the maritime history of the province.

The 55 registered crews will compete across seven categories, bringing together rowers of different ages and experience levels. The races will be held continuously throughout the morning, allowing spectators to follow the competition from the beach.

The event will also offer one of the most recognisable sights of Málaga’s coastline: traditional jábega boats moving through the water in close formation, powered by the coordinated effort of their crews.

A Fishing Tradition Transformed into a Competitive Sport

Jábega boats hold an important place in the cultural heritage of Málaga’s coast. Historically, these vessels were closely linked to fishing and to the livelihoods of many coastal communities.

Over time, the traditional activity evolved into a competitive sport. Today’s regattas preserve Málaga’s maritime identity and help pass this heritage on to new generations of rowers.

The Grand Prix also serves as a tribute to the fishermen and sailors who played a central role in the history of Rincón de la Victoria and other coastal towns.

Rincón de la Victoria’s Strong Connection with Jábega Rowing

The municipality is home to two traditional rowing clubs, which together have more than 100 members.

This strong level of participation has established Rincón de la Victoria as one of the main centres for jábega rowing in the province. Local teams have achieved notable results in recent seasons and continue to play an active role in preserving the sport.

Councillor for Sport Antonio José Martín has highlighted the municipality’s long-standing commitment to protecting and promoting a fishing tradition that has developed into a competitive discipline.

Rincón de la Victoria mayor Francisco Salado has also underlined the cultural importance of jábega rowing and described it as a clear example of how an old maritime activity has successfully evolved into a modern sport.

The competition will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the first qualifying races.

Heats in the different categories will continue throughout the morning.

Once the final races have finished, the awards ceremony is expected to take place at around 2:00 p.m. at the boatyard next to El Tajo.

Spectators will be able to watch the competition from the beach free of charge, and a large turnout of residents, visitors and rowing enthusiasts is expected.

The Entire Event Will Be Streamed Live on YouTube

People unable to attend the event in person will still be able to follow the Grand Prix.

The Traditional Rowing Association will broadcast the full competition live through its official YouTube channel.

The stream will allow viewers to watch the different races, follow the results and enjoy the event from anywhere.

This live coverage will help increase the visibility of traditional jábega rowing and introduce the sport to new audiences both inside and outside the province of Málaga.
