A hidden natural spot along the Castor River

The Charca de las Nutrias sits within the municipal boundaries of Estepona, on the southern slope of Sierra Bermeja. The star of this landscape is the Castor river, which rises in the foothills of the Los Bermejales mountains and flows just under 14 kilometers before reaching the Mediterranean Sea.

It's a short river, but it cuts through an area of remarkable scenic value. Along one of its most striking stretches, water erosion on the white marble so typical of this part of Malaga has carved out a stunning natural pool.

Access starts at exit 160 on the A-7 highway. From there, head toward Viveros Estepona and follow the Camino de la Alberdina for about 3.5 kilometers.

At the end of this track you'll find a clearing next to the AP-7 motorway where you can leave your car. The hike begins from there, crossing the Los Molinos-El Nicio Cultural Park before reaching the Castor river.

The trail runs for roughly 2.5 kilometers. The first stretch is more exposed to the sun, but the path soon enters wooded areas that completely transform the scenery. The route follows the river's left bank and, after about 750 meters, leads straight to the Charca de las Nutrias.

Throughout the walk, the sound of water accompanies every step, while the surroundings blend Mediterranean forest, rock, and vegetation into a well-preserved natural setting.
