The settled weather experienced across Malaga in recent days is coming to an end. Atlantic storm Bruna will begin to affect the province during the latter part of the weekend, although its most significant impact is currently expected between Monday, November 9, and Tuesday, November 10.

Spain’s state weather agency has warned of strong or very strong and persistent rainfall in several parts of western Spain. The change in Malaga is expected to be more gradual: Saturday should remain dry, the first rain may arrive on Sunday evening and conditions will become significantly wetter on Monday.

The western half of the province, particularly the Serranía de Ronda, currently has the highest probability of receiving substantial rainfall.

A settled Saturday before the weather changes

Saturday, November 7, should remain largely dry and calm across Malaga and the Costa del Sol. Forecasts indicate mostly clear skies or some high cloud, with virtually no probability of rain.

Temperatures will remain mild for November. Coastal areas could reach daytime highs of around 23°C or 24°C, while overnight lows will generally remain between 14°C and 16°C.

Inland districts will experience slightly cooler nights, although no dramatic fall in temperature is expected. Morning mist may also form in some parts of the province.

Storm Bruna will approach Malaga on Sunday evening

The first signs of change will appear on Sunday, November 8. The morning could still bring periods of cloud without significant rain, but cloud cover will increase as the day progresses.

The first showers are expected mainly during the late afternoon and evening. During this initial phase, the rain should generally be moderate and is most likely in western Malaga province.

The Serranía de Ronda will be among the areas most exposed to the approaching front. Rain could subsequently spread towards the Guadalhorce Valley, the western Costa del Sol and other parts of the province.

In Malaga city, the likelihood of rain will remain relatively limited for much of Sunday before increasing late in the day.

Monday is expected to be Malaga’s wettest day

Conditions will deteriorate on Monday, November 9. The probability of rain will become very high across much of Malaga province, reaching 100% in several western areas.

Rain could become persistent during the first half of the day, particularly over mountainous terrain exposed to moist Atlantic winds. The intensity and total accumulation will depend on the storm’s final position and the path of its associated weather fronts.

Although southwestern Andalusia is expected to face the greatest risk of strong and persistent rain, Malaga will also feel the effects of the storm. Ronda and the western Costa del Sol are more exposed than the eastern end of the province.

The rain may become less frequent later on Monday, but unsettled conditions are expected to continue.

Unsettled conditions may continue into Tuesday

Storm Bruna will remain influential on Tuesday, November 10. Further rain is possible across Malaga, although there is greater uncertainty regarding its location and intensity.

The episode is currently expected to weaken from Wednesday. However, additional showers cannot yet be ruled out in parts of mainland Spain and Andalusia.

The forecast could change depending on the storm’s precise position, making further updates important during the coming days.

Will Malaga experience very strong and persistent rain?

The warning of “very strong and persistent” rainfall applies primarily to western parts of Spain that are particularly exposed to southerly and southwesterly winds. These areas include Galicia, Extremadura, the Gredos mountain region and southwestern Andalusia.

The initial forecast for Malaga is less severe. Rain is likely to begin in the western half of the province on Sunday evening before becoming persistent in some of the same areas on Monday.

Rainfall will therefore not be equally intense across the entire province. The Serranía de Ronda and western Malaga currently have the greatest potential to record significant accumulations.

Wind and rough seas in Andalusia

Bruna will bring more than rain. Southerly and southwesterly winds are also expected, with strong gusts in some locations and increasingly rough sea conditions.

The most significant coastal conditions will affect Andalusia’s Atlantic shoreline, where waves could approach four metres. The initial impact on Malaga’s Mediterranean coast should be less severe, although anyone planning activities at sea should check the latest forecast.

No weather warnings currently active in Malaga

As of early Friday, November 6, no official weather warnings have been activated for Malaga during the weekend. This could change as the storm moves closer and meteorologists gain a clearer view of its likely path.

Updates will provide more precise information about rainfall totals, the areas most exposed and whether weather alerts are required.

Residents and visitors should monitor the latest information, particularly before travelling or planning outdoor activities in rural, coastal or mountainous areas.

Safety advice ahead of the rain

Several basic precautions can help reduce risks during persistent rainfall:

  • Never drive or walk through flooded roads or watercourses.
  • Avoid parking in dry riverbeds or areas prone to flooding.
  • Reduce speed and increase distances when driving in heavy rain.
  • Secure awnings, plant pots and loose objects on balconies.
  • Check road conditions before travelling.
  • Follow instructions issued by emergency and municipal services.
  • Review the forecast before visiting mountainous or coastal areas.
