Classical music and gastronomy will come together in The Flavours of Music, an original cultural series taking place over three consecutive Sundays at Teatro del Carmen in Vélez-Málaga.

Led by pianist Juan Ignacio Fernández Morales, the programme will introduce audiences to the defining characteristics of Baroque, Classical and Romantic music in an accessible and entertaining way.

Each event will combine live piano performances, explanations about different musical styles and a gastronomic tasting connected with the period being explored. Attendance will be free, but advance registration is required.

Three Sundays exploring classical music

The Flavours of Music will take place on 1, 8 and 15 November 2026, with every session beginning at 12 noon.

Rather than presenting a conventional piano recital, Fernández Morales will alternate live performances with explanations, anecdotes and listening tips.

The aim is to help audiences identify what makes each musical period distinctive, understand how a composition is structured and discover how music has been used to communicate emotions throughout history.

No previous musical knowledge will be required. The format is designed both for classical music enthusiasts and for people who would like to explore the genre for the first time.

The Flavours of Music programme

Each Sunday will focus on a different period in the history of Western classical music.

Sunday, 1 November: the ingredients of music and the Baroque period

The opening session will introduce the fundamental elements used to create a piece of music and connect them with the Baroque period.

Audiences will discover the characteristics of an era known for its ornamentation, dramatic contrasts and development of new musical forms.

Sunday, 8 November: musical structures and the Classical period

The second event will explore how musical works are organised and examine the main features of the Classical period.

The session will explain how melodies, rhythms and individual sections are arranged to create balance, clarity and structure.

Sunday, 15 November: emotions and the Romantic period

The final session will examine music’s ability to communicate feelings and personal experiences.

The Romantic period will provide the starting point for discovering how composers used intensity, contrast and creative freedom to express powerful emotions.

A gastronomic tasting after every session

One of the most distinctive aspects of the programme will be its connection with food. At the end of every session, attendees will be invited to enjoy a gastronomic tasting related to the musical period or style discussed that day.

The aim is to extend the experience beyond listening by connecting the music with the flavours and wider cultural environment of each era.

This combination transforms each event into a journey through music, history and gastronomy, offering a different way to spend a Sunday morning in Vélez-Málaga.

Pianist Juan Ignacio Fernández Morales leads the series

Pianist Juan Ignacio Fernández Morales will lead all three events.

His role will extend beyond performing at the piano. He will explain the defining features of each period, share stories and help audiences identify the differences between individual musical styles.

The approachable format aims to challenge the idea that classical music is difficult to understand or intended only for people with specialist training.

By combining clear explanations with live piano performances, the series will show how music is constructed and why compositions written centuries ago still have the power to move modern audiences.

Free admission with advance registration

Admission to The Flavours of Music will be free of charge, although advance registration is essential.

Anyone wishing to attend should request a place by emailing:

Applicants should consider including the names of all attendees and identifying which sessions they would like to attend.

A different cultural experience in Vélez-Málaga

The series offers an appealing option for anyone looking for cultural events in Vélez-Málaga and the Axarquía during November.

Its midday schedule makes it easy to combine the activity with a walk through the historic centre or lunch at one of the area’s restaurants.

Teatro del Carmen also provides a fitting setting for a programme designed to introduce classical music through a more dynamic, interactive and welcoming format.
