Málaga has once again entered the Marvel spotlight. Just weeks after hosting thousands of fans during San Diego Comic-Con Málaga 2026, two of the city’s best-known monuments have become part of the promotional campaign for Avengers: Doomsday.

The Roman Theatre and the Alcazaba of Málaga appear in a special Marvel Studios video in which green lighting transforms the historic centre after dark.

The campaign features Anthony Mackie, David Harbour and Winston Duke, all of whom are part of the cast of the next Avengers film.

The result connects one of the year’s biggest cinema releases with two of Málaga’s most recognisable historic landmarks.

Málaga’s Roman Theatre turns green

The promotional piece shows the monumental area at night.

The Roman Theatre is illuminated in green, the colour used in this phase of the campaign to reinforce the presence of Doctor Doom as the major threat in the new film.

The familiar Avengers symbol is also projected onto the Alcazaba above.

For a few moments, the archaeological and historic complex in central Málaga is transformed into something that looks as though it belongs inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Anthony Mackie, David Harbour and Winston Duke lead the campaign

The video features three familiar faces for Marvel fans.

Anthony Mackie returns as Sam Wilson, the current Captain America.

The character inherited Steve Rogers’ shield and has become one of the central figures in Marvel’s new generation of heroes.

He is joined by David Harbour, who plays Alexei Shostakov, better known as Red Guardian.

The character first appeared in Black Widow before returning as part of the team in Thunderbolts.

The third actor is Winston Duke, who reprises his role as M’Baku, first introduced in Black Panther and now one of Wakanda’s best-known characters.

The campaign was filmed during Comic-Con Málaga

The appearance of the three actors in the city is directly linked to San Diego Comic-Con Málaga 2026.

Disney surprised the audience during its presentation at Hall M in Málaga’s exhibition and conference centre with the arrival of Mackie, Harbour and Duke.

They appeared after a recorded message from Anthony and Joe Russo, the directors of Avengers: Doomsday.

During the panel, the actors discussed the new film and introduced material prepared specially for the audience.

Their visit was also used to film the promotional action around the Roman Theatre and Alcazaba.

Málaga extends the impact of Comic-Con

Publishing the video several weeks after the convention allows Málaga to remain connected with one of Marvel Studios’ biggest upcoming titles.

The second edition of San Diego Comic-Con Málaga once again brought major names from film, television, comics and entertainment to the city.

Disney used the event to promote several future releases and reserved one of its biggest surprises for Avengers: Doomsday.

The campaign filmed in the historic centre now extends that relationship beyond the days of the convention itself.

An unusual image of Málaga’s historic centre

The choice of the Roman Theatre and Alcazaba creates a striking visual contrast.

The Roman Theatre dates back to the early Roman Empire.

Behind it stands the Alcazaba, an Islamic fortress built centuries later.

For the campaign, both monuments are temporarily linked through the visual identity of one of the 21st century’s biggest entertainment franchises.

The effect combines more than two thousand years of history with the imagery of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Avengers logo projected onto the Alcazaba

One of the most recognisable moments comes when the Avengers logo appears projected across the Alcazaba.

The familiar stylised “A” becomes the central visual element of the campaign.

Green lighting completes the aesthetic and immediately connects the setting with the world of Doomsday.

The three actors also appear in front of the Roman Theatre, making the Málaga monument a direct backdrop to Marvel’s official promotional material.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in Spain on 17 December

Marvel Studios’ new film will arrive in Spanish cinemas on Thursday 17 December 2026.

It had initially been scheduled for 18 December, but Disney announced during Comic-Con Málaga that the Spanish release would move forward by one day.

Advance ticket sales began shortly after the event.

Disney later confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday had sold more than 90,000 advance tickets in Spain within its first 48 hours, setting a new record for a Walt Disney Studios film in the country.

More than 130,000 tickets sold ahead of release

Interest has continued to grow.

According to the latest figures released by Disney Spain, Avengers: Doomsday has already exceeded 130,000 advance tickets sold in Spain with around two months still to go before release.

The company is using the Málaga footage as part of this new stage of the marketing campaign.

That makes the Roman Theatre and Alcazaba sequence more than a standalone publicity stunt: it is part of the official countdown to one of December’s biggest cinema releases.

Several corners of the Marvel universe come together

Official information from Disney indicates that the story will bring together heroes from different parts of the Marvel universe.

Marvel has not revealed every detail of the plot, but the cast gives a clear sense of the scale.

The Avengers will be joined by characters connected with Wakanda, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and the Thunderbolts, among others.

The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the filmmakers behind Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Robert Downey Jr. returns, but not as Iron Man

One of the biggest draws of Doomsday is the return of Robert Downey Jr.

For more than a decade, the actor was the face of Tony Stark, or Iron Man, and one of the central figures around whom Marvel Studios built its cinematic universe.

This time, however, he is playing a completely different character.

Downey Jr. returns as Victor von Doom, Doctor Doom, one of the most important and powerful villains in Marvel comics.

His comeback therefore marks a major break from the role with which audiences associated him for so many years.

Chris Evans is also back in the cast

The film also brings back another major name from the original Avengers era.

Chris Evans is officially listed among the cast.

The actor played Steve Rogers, the original Captain America, whose story appeared to reach its conclusion at the end of Avengers: Endgame.

Disney also confirms appearances by Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Tom Hiddleston, Sebastian Stan and Letitia Wright, among many others.

The X-Men also enter the story

The cast also features a strong presence from characters linked to the X-Men.

Confirmed actors include Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming and Rebecca Romijn.

Their inclusion reinforces one of the key themes of Marvel’s current phase: bringing together characters that once existed in separate film universes.

The Fantastic Four will also be represented by performers including Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

Anthony Mackie promises major moments for every character

During his appearance at Comic-Con Málaga, Anthony Mackie suggested that the film is designed to give its large cast individual moments to shine.

The obvious comparison is Endgame, where Marvel brought together dozens of characters from different films within a single story.

The scale of the Doomsday cast creates a similar challenge.

As the current Captain America, Mackie’s Sam Wilson is expected to be one of the characters connecting several parts of that enormous ensemble.

David Harbour highlights the scale of the story

David Harbour also spoke in Málaga about the production.

The actor explained that the cast gradually became aware of the full scale of the story during production and expressed enthusiasm about the finished project.

His character, Red Guardian, arrives in Doomsday after appearing in Thunderbolts, which added yet another team of heroes and antiheroes to the current MCU.

That growing number of characters and groups will be central to Marvel’s next major crossover.

Málaga becomes part of one of 2026’s biggest film campaigns

Using the Roman Theatre and Alcazaba gives Málaga another moment of international exposure.

The city is not necessarily appearing as a location within the film’s narrative.

Instead, it is being used as part of the promotional campaign filmed during the cast’s visit to Málaga.

That distinction matters: the sequence does not mean Avengers: Doomsday was shot at the monuments as part of the movie itself.

Even so, the images place two of Málaga’s most iconic landmarks inside official Marvel Studios marketing.

From Hall M to the Roman Theatre

The campaign also sums up what Comic-Con is beginning to mean for Málaga’s relationship with major entertainment companies.

For several days, Disney was able to present upcoming productions directly to thousands of fans in the city.

Afterwards, Málaga’s historic centre became a location for promotional material now circulating as part of the national campaign for a major blockbuster.

From the exhibition centre to the Roman Theatre and Alcazaba, Marvel’s presence has extended across very different parts of the city.

Countdown to December

With less than two months until release, Marvel is accelerating promotion for Avengers: Doomsday.

The film reaches Spanish cinemas on 17 December 2026, with a cast bringing together characters from several generations and franchises.

And Málaga is already part of that countdown.

The image of the Roman Theatre glowing green and the Avengers symbol projected onto the Alcazaba briefly turns one of the city’s most recognisable historic views into a scene from the Marvel universe.
