Málaga Airport Expansion Plans Larger Terminal and Capacity for 36 Million Passengers

An Airport Preparing for More Passengers

Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport is planning its biggest transformation since Terminal 3 opened in 2010. The expansion aims to accommodate future growth and increase capacity to 36 million passengers a year.

Aena’s proposal would increase the terminal area from 80,000 to 140,000 square metres. The plans also call for the demolition of the former Terminal 1 building and the existing B and C piers to reorganise the space.

More Room for Boarding and Passenger Checks

A new pier for non-Schengen flights, with centralised border control, is one of the main features. Security areas and aircraft stands with direct boarding bridges would also be expanded.

Other planned changes include a redesigned baggage handling system, new taxiways to improve aircraft movement, and upgraded access roads and car parks. Aena also expects to provide more space for shops and VIP lounges.

Design Work Is Under Way

A team formed by Cemosa, Fairbanks Arquitectos and Sener was awarded the terminal design contract in May 2026. According to Cemosa, the contract also includes technical support during construction.

The award moves the design forward; it does not mean expansion work has begun. Construction will need to be planned around the airport’s continued operation. The total investment is currently estimated at approximately €1.5 billion.
