Ronda’s Tajo Gorge Walk opens in full on 16 September: tickets cost €12 and the route stretches for almost one kilometre

Ronda will unveil one of its major new tourist attractions on Wednesday, 16 September 2026. That day, the second phase of the Camino del Desfiladero del Tajo will officially open, completing a route of almost one kilometre through one of the most spectacular landscapes in Málaga province.

The extension will allow visitors to go far beyond the usual viewpoints above the gorge. The route will descend from the historic centre to the base of the Puente Nuevo before continuing through the gorge along a walkway beside the Guadalevín River.

General admission will cost €12, while residents officially registered in Ronda will be able to visit free of charge.

A new view of the Puente Nuevo and the Tajo

One of the biggest attractions of the route is the chance to see the Puente Nuevo from below, offering a completely different perspective from the viewpoints around the historic centre.

The first phase, opened in 2024, already allowed visitors to descend towards the base of the bridge. The second phase now extends the route deeper into the gorge, following the river.

The new walkway will also bring visitors closer to other historic bridges in Ronda, creating a route where the city’s monumental heritage meets the natural landscape carved out by the Guadalevín over thousands of years.

Almost one kilometre through the heart of Ronda

With the new section added, the full route will stretch for almost one kilometre.

The second phase was designed by architect Luis Machuca’s studio and built by Sando, with infrastructure created to adapt to a particularly complex setting because of the steep terrain and proximity to the river.

The route will finish near the former Ermita de San Miguel, close to the Arab Baths.

Ronda Town Hall has also prepared an adjoining building that will serve as a new exit point and auxiliary tourism office, creating another visitor hub in the Padre Jesús area.

€12 tickets and free access for Ronda residents

The Tajo Gorge Walk will be managed by the municipal company Turismo de Ronda.

General admission for the full route will cost €12, while people officially registered as residents of Ronda will be able to enter free of charge.

Bookings will be available through the dedicated website for the Camino del Desfiladero.

For the time being, the council has decided not to open direct sales through tour operators, despite strong interest from companies in the tourism sector.

More than 160,000 visits a year to the first phase

The expansion comes after the strong response to the first section since it opened in 2024.

According to municipal figures, the Camino del Desfiladero already attracts more than 160,000 visitors a year, a number that could rise further once the full route is available.

Until now, much of Ronda’s tourism has concentrated around the Puente Nuevo, Plaza de España and the main streets of the historic centre.

The new exit is intended to encourage visitors to continue towards less crowded parts of the city.

Padre Jesús and the Arrabal become part of the tourist route

One of the main goals of the project is to spread visitor flows more evenly across Ronda.

The exit near the Ermita de San Miguel will direct visitors towards areas such as Padre Jesús, the Arrabal and the Arab Baths, which traditionally receive fewer visitors than the immediate surroundings of the Puente Nuevo.

The council hopes the new route will not only reduce pressure on the busiest tourist areas, but also encourage visitors to spend more time in Ronda, explore additional neighbourhoods and potentially increase overnight stays.

More than €1 million invested in the project

Completing the Camino del Desfiladero has required a total investment of more than €1 million.

The project has been developed in phases and has received support from different public authorities: the Andalusian Regional Government contributed to the first phase, while the Málaga Provincial Council supported the second.

From 16 September, visitors will therefore be able to experience one of Andalusia’s most photographed landmarks from a completely different angle: not only from above the gorge, but from inside it, almost at river level beside the Guadalevín.
