Torre del Mar celebrates Tourist Day with a giant free cake for more than 4,000 people

Torre del Mar has prepared a particularly sweet way to round off August. On Thursday 27 August 2026, residents and visitors will be able to enjoy a free tasting of a giant cake with more than 4,000 portions, created especially for Tourist Day.

The event will begin at 8.30pm on Paseo Marítimo de Poniente, next to the lighthouse, one of the town’s most recognisable seafront landmarks. It is organised by the Torre del Mar local authority together with Vélez-Málaga Town Hall’s Tourism Department.

This year, the cake itself will also tell part of the town’s story, as its decoration will be dedicated to the history of Torre del Mar’s lighthouses.

A cake covering almost six square metres

The giant dessert will once again be created by local chef Roberto Soler, from Escuela de Cocina Sabores.

For this edition, the format will change from some previous years. Instead of a particularly long cake, the organisers have opted for a large rectangular design covering almost six square metres.

From it, more than 4,000 individual portions will be served free of charge to those attending the event.

What goes into Torre del Mar’s giant cake?

The size of the dessert requires quantities far beyond those of a normal bakery recipe.

It will use around 100 sheets of white sponge cake, which would stretch for roughly 60 metres if placed end to end.

The recipe will also include approximately 350 litres of vegetable cream, 50 litres of spiced syrup, 60 kilos of speculoos cream and 15 kilos of crushed speculoos biscuits.

Around 80 kilos of fondant will be used to create the decorative elements linked to this year’s lighthouse theme.

Torre del Mar’s lighthouses take centre stage

The decoration will offer a visual journey through an important part of the town’s maritime history.

Torre del Mar has had several lighthouses over the years, and these structures are closely connected to the transformation of its coastline. The cake will therefore include large fondant figures, edible sand and a sea effect made with cream.

The current lighthouse will also form part of the real-life setting, as the tasting will take place right beside it.

Tourist Day is designed as a gesture of appreciation towards those who choose Torre del Mar and Vélez-Málaga for their holidays, while also adding a distinctive event to the town’s summer programme.

Its location makes it easy to turn the tasting into a complete evening plan: head to the promenade before sunset, enjoy a slice of cake and then continue with a walk or dinner by the Mediterranean.
