Calle Pasillas unveils a new look in Antequera after an almost €590,000 transformation

Antequera has completed the transformation of one of the streets linking its historic centre with several residential areas. Calle Pasillas is now fully operational again following the completion of the second and final phase of works, bringing the total investment to almost €590,000.

The project has effectively renewed the entire street, covering around 150 metres, with particular attention paid to pedestrian accessibility, safety and the use of materials that fit the character of Antequera’s historic centre.

A second phase worth around €300,000

The latest works focused on approximately 75 metres of Calle Pasillas and required an investment of close to €300,000.

This phase began in mid-January and lasted for around six and a half months, with the final works completed towards the end of August.

Combined with the first phase, the overall investment in the street now stands at close to €590,000.

The second stage of the project also generated between 60 and 70 jobs, mainly for skilled workers and labourers.

A more accessible street in the historic centre

One of the biggest changes can be seen in the new layout.

Calle Pasillas now features a single-level platform, reducing changes in height and making it easier for pedestrians to move through the area, particularly people with reduced mobility.

Materials including concrete and granite have been used to create a safer, more comfortable and slip-resistant surface while maintaining an appearance suited to the historic surroundings.

Similar solutions are also being introduced in other parts of Antequera to improve accessibility without losing the traditional character of the town’s streets.

An important link between several Antequera neighbourhoods

The renovation is particularly significant because of Calle Pasillas’ location.

The street provides access towards Las Peñuelas and connects areas including San Miguel, Portichuelo and San Juan, while also linking different parts of the upper and lower town.

Its reopening therefore benefits not only residents of the street itself, but also people who regularly use it to travel between these neighbourhoods and the town centre.

Antequera continues upgrading its historic streets

The Calle Pasillas project forms part of a wider programme of public-space improvements being carried out through the Agricultural Employment Promotion Programme (PFEA).

Similar projects have been completed or planned across Antequera in recent years, with a shared objective: renewing ageing infrastructure, improving pedestrian mobility and creating a more accessible urban centre.

In Calle Pasillas, that process is now complete.

After two phases of work and an investment of almost €590,000, the street returns to normal use with a fully renewed appearance while maintaining its role as an important connection through Antequera’s historic centre.
