Guide to the Virgen del Carmen Processions in Málaga and the Province

Málaga will once again turn towards the sea to celebrate one of the most eagerly awaited summer traditions: the feast day of the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of sailors and fishermen.

Every 16 July, several neighbourhoods in Málaga city and municipalities across the province hold processions in honour of the Virgin. In many coastal areas, the image is first carried through the streets before being taken out to sea on a traditional boat to bless the waters of the Mediterranean.

The celebration brings together devotion, maritime tradition and a festive atmosphere, especially in places such as El Palo, Pedregalejo, El Perchel, Huelin, La Carihuela, Los Boliches, Rincón de la Victoria, Torre del Mar, Nerja, Marbella and Estepona.

A Tradition Closely Linked to the Sea

The Virgen del Carmen is also known as the Queen of the Seas due to her strong connection with those who work at sea.

In many towns along the Málaga coastline, the image is carried through the streets before being taken to the beach or harbour for the maritime procession.

One of the most emotional moments usually comes when the Virgin is taken out to sea, accompanied by boats and followed by hundreds of people from the shore.

Main Processions on 16 July

Although some times may be subject to last-minute changes, these are some of the main processions planned for the feast day of the Virgen del Carmen in Málaga and the province:

El Palo: departure at around 5:00 p.m.
Rincón de la Victoria: departure from the parish church at 8:00 p.m., with embarkation expected at 8:45 p.m.
La Cala del Moral: departure at 7:00 p.m., with embarkation at around 9:15 p.m.
Pedregalejo: departure at 7:00 p.m., with the maritime procession from around 9:30 p.m.
Torremolinos, La Carihuela: departure at 7:00 p.m.
Fuengirola, Los Boliches: departure at around 8:45 p.m.
Benalmádena: departure at 6:00 p.m.
Guadalmar: procession from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
La Virreina: departure at 8:00 p.m.
Campanillas: departure at 8:00 p.m.
Olías: departure at 8:00 p.m.

El Perchel and Huelin Will Celebrate During the Weekend

The programme will continue over the weekend with some of the most anticipated processions in Málaga city.

On Saturday 18 July, it will be the turn of the Virgen del Carmen Coronada of El Perchel, one of Málaga’s most deeply rooted maritime devotions. The day will include a maritime procession in the morning, expected at 10:30 a.m., followed by an evening procession from 7:30 p.m.

That same day, the Virgen del Carmen of the Submariners is scheduled to depart at 9:30 a.m., while the procession in Colonia de Santa Inés will take place at 7:45 p.m.

On Sunday 19 July, the Virgen del Carmen of Huelin is expected to leave the parish church of San Patricio at 6:00 p.m., followed by embarkation on the Antonio Machado seafront promenade.

The Province Also Celebrates the Patron Saint

The feast is celebrated with particular intensity in many towns across the Costa del Sol and the Axarquía.

In municipalities such as Torre del Mar, Caleta de Vélez, Nerja, Marbella, Estepona, Manilva, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Rincón de la Victoria, the Virgen del Carmen is the focus of land-and-sea processions that attract residents, visitors and tourists every year.

These celebrations highlight the province’s historic relationship with the sea and make July one of the most important months in Málaga’s festive calendar.
