From The Phantom of the Opera to Vicente Amigo: Nine Major Events at Málaga’s Teatro Cervantes

The Teatro Cervantes in Málaga is preparing for a varied programme over the coming months. After hosting one of the world’s best-known musicals during the summer, the venue will begin September with major opera voices before welcoming jazz, pop, rock, singer-songwriter music and flamenco.

Here are the nine events in chronological order.

3 July to 9 August: The Phantom of the Opera

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s celebrated musical, inspired by Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel, will remain in Málaga until 9 August.

Set inside the Paris Opera House, the story follows a mysterious figure who lives beneath the theatre and becomes fascinated by the talent of young singer Christine Daaé. The production combines romance, suspense, spectacular scenery and some of musical theatre’s most recognisable songs.

Performances take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9:00 p.m., with two shows on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

10 September: Carlos Álvarez and Sabina Puértolas

The 38th Opera Season will open with a gala featuring Málaga baritone Carlos Álvarez and Navarrese soprano Sabina Puértolas, accompanied by the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of José María Moreno.

The programme will combine opera and zarzuela, with works by Mozart, Donizetti, Delibes and Verdi, as well as pieces by Chapí, Moreno Torroba, Giménez, Chueca, Alonso and Sorozábal.

The performance will take place on Thursday, 10 September at 8:00 p.m. Tickets range from €18 to €54.

13 September: Dido and Aeneas

Baroque opera will arrive at the Cervantes with a new version of Dido and Aeneas, Henry Purcell’s famous work based on a libretto by Nahum Tate.

The Ensemble Les Surprises production will feature an entirely female vocal cast, recalling the spirit of the work’s original performance at a girls’ school in London. Music, theatre, dance, arias, choruses and texts by Virgil and Shakespeare will come together in a complete stage production.

The performance will take place on Sunday, 13 September at 7:00 p.m. Tickets cost between €22 and €75.

14 September: Antonio Sánchez Performs Birdman Live

Mexican drummer Antonio Sánchez will present Birdman Live, combining a screening of Alejandro González Iñárritu’s film with a live performance of its soundtrack.

Sánchez, a four-time Grammy Award winner, will recreate a score largely shaped by improvisation, meaning each performance offers a slightly different experience.

The show is part of MOSMA Reloaded and will take place on Monday, 14 September at 8:00 p.m. Tickets cost €36.

18 September: Pancho Céspedes, Enrique Ramil and José Luis Jaén

Three voices will come together for the first time in 3 de corazones, a show starring Pancho Céspedes, Enrique Ramil and José Luis Jaén.

The performance will be divided into four acts—Being Passionate, Being Vulnerable, Being Loved and Being Human—exploring different emotions through original songs and major romantic compositions from both sides of the Atlantic.

The concert will take place on Friday, 18 September at 8:00 p.m. Tickets range from €16 to €48.

19 September: Los Sírex Celebrate 65 Years

Spanish rock will also be represented with Los Sírex’s 65th anniversary tour, celebrating one of the pioneering bands of the genre in Spain.

Led by Leslie, the group will perform songs that have become part of the musical memory of several generations, including La escoba and Que se mueran los feos.

The concert will take place on Saturday, 19 September at 8:00 p.m. Tickets cost between €12 and €36.

20 September: Andrés Suárez Presents Lúa

Galician singer-songwriter Andrés Suárez will arrive at the Teatro Cervantes with Lúa, his tenth studio album and one of the most personal projects of his career.

The album follows an emotional journey from darkness towards a new beginning. He will present his latest songs in an intimate acoustic format, alongside some of the best-known tracks from his career.

The concert will take place on Sunday, 20 September at 7:00 p.m. Tickets range from €12 to €36.

25 September: Vicente Amigo Returns with Andenes del tiempo

Guitarist Vicente Amigo will present a concert based on his ninth album, Andenes del tiempo, together with other outstanding works from his career.

He will be accompanied by guitar, percussion, bass, vocals, handclaps, violin, cello, flutes and oboe. Rooted in flamenco, the performance will also explore a wide range of musical influences and textures.

The concert will take place on Friday, 25 September at 8:00 p.m. Tickets cost between €15 and €45.

27 September: Berna Perles Pays Tribute to Manuel de Falla

Málaga soprano Berna Perles and pianist Rubén Fernández Aguirre will close the programme with Manuel de Falla: Pasión y duende, marking the 150th anniversary of the Cádiz-born composer’s birth.

The recital will explore Falla’s popular roots and his connection with flamenco, copla and Andalusian musical tradition. It will also include works by Ángel Barrios and Joaquín Turina, as well as Seven Spanish Folk Songs.

The performance will take place on Sunday, 27 September at 7:00 p.m. Tickets range from €12 to €36.

All events will take place at the Teatro Cervantes in Málaga, located on Calle Ramos Marín in the Historic Centre.

Tickets are available through the theatre’s official sales channels and box office. General ticket sales for the opera events featuring Carlos Álvarez and Sabina Puértolas, Dido and Aeneas and Berna Perles will begin on 16 July, following an advance sale for subscribers on 14 and 15 July at the box office.
