Torremolinos enhances beach security this summer with assistants, bicycle police, and drones

Torremolinos has activated a special security and surveillance operation for the summer season aimed at enhancing coexistence, citizen attention, and compliance with municipal ordinances in the coastal area. The operation has been underway since June 1 and will continue during the months of highest tourist influx. The operation includes 15 beach assistants, 12 local police officers on bicycles, and a new drone unit, which will provide support to improve surveillance, prevention, and police coordination tasks on beaches, events, and areas with large crowds. The beach assistants, who are already providing services along the municipality's coast, will function as support and complement to the security arrangement planned for the frontline beach area. "This year we are strengthening security on the frontline beach with the aim of preventing crimes and being vigilant against all types of attitudes that may violate local ordinances," explained the mayor of Torremolinos, Margarita del Cid (PP). Unlike other years, the beach assistants will not end their activity in September. According to the mayor, these officers will continue to provide services throughout the year to enhance security and attention along the coast. The assistants will perform information, support, and surveillance functions on the Promenade and in the beach areas. They will also collaborate in enforcing municipal ordinances, decrees, and regulations related to unauthorized street vending, proper use of the beaches, and coexistence in public spaces. The operation is completed with a bicycle unit of the Torremolinos Local Police, consisting of 12 officers. This service will allow quicker, closer, and more flexible action in areas of high tourist and pedestrian presence, especially during the summer months. The officers will perform preventive tasks, control of street vending, surveillance of ordinances, and direct attention to residents and visitors. The presence of police on bicycles will also improve the mobility of the officers in coastal areas where vehicle access is more limited. This year, Torremolinos will also have a drone unit that will support surveillance, prevention, and police coordination tasks. This tool will allow for improved supervision of beaches, events, and public spaces with high concentrations of people. The City Council has highlighted that the coordination between beach assistants, Local Police, and the lifesaving and rescue operation will provide a more effective response to the needs that arise in the municipality during the high season, when there is a significant increase in population. Last summer, the special security and surveillance operation carried out 272 actions in the coastal area of Torremolinos. Among the services provided were interventions related to the assistance of people, citizen coexistence, vehicle traffic, and street vending. According to municipal data, the material seized from street vending and findings in public areas last summer amounted to about 6.6 tons. The City Council warns that unauthorized street vending not only constitutes illegal competition for traders but may also be related to other crimes, such as money laundering or the importation of counterfeit goods.
