Marbella enhances its international appeal with the arrival of Mercato della Fontanella
The Costa del Sol continues to consolidate itself as a magnet for foreign investment with the opening of Mercato della Fontanella, the first European project by Simón Jacobo, co-founder and owner of the American group Vida y Estilo Hospitality Group (V&E Hospitality Group). This new venue, located in the central neighborhood of La Fontanilla, will offer a comprehensive proposal combining a high-end Italian restaurant with a signature cocktail bar and a gourmet shop.
In the last five years, more than 90 international companies have established operations in Málaga, creating over 7,000 jobs according to data from the Málaga Open for Business Investor Office. Last year, American companies led the interest with five new additions to the region, consolidating the Costa del Sol as a strategic destination for investments in sectors such as technology, professional services, and hospitality.
Marbella, with its positioning as a top-tier tourist and gastronomic destination, has become one of the most attractive cities for the expansion of international projects. According to Yohana Carmona, General Manager of Mercato della Fontanella, "Marbella has always been a global destination that attracts a demanding and diverse audience, making it the perfect place to make the leap to Europe. The Costa del Sol has a rich gastronomic tradition and an atmosphere that perfectly embodies the group's philosophy of merging authenticity with innovation."
Founded by José Simón Jacobo, V&E Hospitality Group is notable for a portfolio that includes renowned brands such as Café Americano, PaperFish, Barsecco, Havana 1957, and Mercato. Recognized for offering experiences that uniquely integrate gastronomy, mixology, and entertainment, the group, based in Las Vegas, has successfully expanded its presence in the United States. Now, it is betting on Marbella as its strategic entry into the European market.
The arrival on the Costa del Sol is materialized under its flagship brand, "Mercato," which debuted at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas under the name Mercato della Pescheria and expanded its reach with a second location in Miami, known as Mercato di Mare. This innovative concept evolves in Marbella with Mercato della Fontanella, inspired by its location in the central neighborhood of La Fontanilla. The new space reflects a deep commitment to the local environment and excellence in every detail.
The project in Marbella, which has generated 25 jobs, is a collaboration between Simón Jacobo and two local entrepreneurs, Francisco Martín (owner of the Kuve Hotel, among others) and José Lozano Muñoz, founder of the iconic Oh Marbella establishment from the 90s, who bring their knowledge of the market and culture of the region.
The concept of Mercato della Fontanella encompasses three distinct areas that reflect the tradition and modernity of Italian gastronomy:
• Restaurant: Led by José Antonio Montana, and with the expertise of chef Davide Buglino, the restaurant presents a concept of traditional Italian cuisine reinterpreted with a modern and cosmopolitan vision. Its proposal stands out for innovative and creative dishes, such as fresh pastas and risottos, prepared with premium quality ingredients. The careful selection of Italian wines complements the gastronomic experience, designed to offer authenticity with a contemporary approach. This approach expands Marbella's dining offerings, positioning it as a reference gastronomic destination.
• Cocktail Bar: Offers signature cocktails with a seasonal focus, combining traditional Italian flavors with modern mixology techniques.
• Gourmet Shop: This is a space dedicated to Italian products such as cheeses, olive oils, wines, and high-end pasta, available for visitors who wish to take the experience home.
The gastronomic offering combines imported products from Italy with kilometer 0 ingredients, reflecting a commitment to sustainability. Among the options are dishes prepared live, such as fresh pastas and cuts of Italian cold cuts, which can also be taken home.
Negrini, an Italian firm recognized for the importation of high-quality gourmet products, is a key pillar in the proposal of Mercato della Fontanella. Its ingredients, sourced from various regions of Italy, are the basis of the dishes at the restaurant and some of the products offered in the gourmet shop. The opening is supervised by Enrica Barni, executive chef of Negrini, and William Sequera, sommelier of the brand, who have worked alongside the local team to ensure that every detail reflects the excellence that characterizes this project. They will also provide follow-up and support with visits, training courses, and workshops, monitoring the establishment's kitchen.
The restaurant, with a capacity for 160 diners, offers a spacious outdoor terrace and an interior lounge carefully designed to provide a comfortable and immersive experience. Among its attractions, the showcooking space stands out, where customers can closely witness the preparation of the dishes, adding an interactive touch to their visit. With an average price of €40 per person, the establishment will be open every day from 12:00 pm to 12:00 am. The kitchen service will be available in two shifts, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm and from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm, while the bar will continue serving Italian snacks until midnight.
