Estepona Discovers Early 20th Century Wooden Roof During Archaeological Museum Expansion Works

The City Council of Estepona has discovered a coffered ceiling or wooden beam system from the early 20th century during the expansion works of the Municipal Archaeological Museum - located in the old Town Hall - a roof that the Council will preserve and apply treatment to maintain it in optimal conditions, as reported this Thursday by the councilor for Heritage, Daniel García.

The councilor explained that it is a coffered ceiling of large dimensions, more than 100 square meters and very well preserved, dating from the early 20th century, highlighting that this wooden beam system was very commonly used in the city in the construction of houses, although in later renovations it was common to cover it with a false ceiling, as had happened in this case.

The municipal official emphasized the importance for the Council of recovering and preserving the municipal heritage and explained that after this discovery, the City Council decided to change the original project which planned to replace the building's false ceiling.

Thus, he pointed out that it has been determined to keep the wooden beam framework visible, so common in Estepona constructions of this era, which "allows these rooms to have greater height, highlighting the age of the building and preserving structures that explain part of our past."

Finally, Daniel García stated that very soon, residents and visitors will be able to admire this beam roof, as it will be part of the new rooms being set up on the upper part of the Archaeological Museum and will house dozens of pieces from the prehistoric, Roman, and Islamic periods.

The expansion works of this exhibition space also include the remodeling of the bathrooms in the central courtyard, carpentry, flooring, stairs, and the installation of an elevator.
