A Date with the Universe at 800 Meters High: The Most Spectacular Planetarium of the Summer Returns in Málaga

Summer in Málaga is not only enjoyed at the beach. At an altitude of over 800 meters, above the horizon of Benalmádena, Mount Calamorro once again becomes a privileged enclave to admire the firmament. With the arrival of the warmer months, the Benalmádena Cable Car extends its usual schedule and resumes one of its most unique activities: the Outdoor Planetarium. This summer proposal offers a unique astronomical experience under the Malaga sky, in a natural environment with little light pollution.

From July 21st to August 31st, users of the Benalmádena Cable Car can enjoy an additional nighttime attraction. Starting at 8:00 PM, those who access the summit with a supplement of 3 euros can attend, from 9:45 PM, astronomical observation sessions as part of the Outdoor Planetarium. This activity, included in the special program of The Nights of the Cable Car, is designed for all audiences and aims to offer an informative and enjoyable view of the universe.

The content of the sessions is coordinated by The Sky Classroom, a professional scientific dissemination initiative founded in 2005. During these starry nights, attendees will get to know the sky with the naked eye and learn to identify constellations, celestial bodies, stars, and elements of the Solar System and deep space. The explanations, always rigorous and accessible, are complemented with mythological references that enrich the experience.

An astronomical viewpoint with unique views

Mount Calamorro, where the cable car journey ends, stands as one of the most prominent natural viewpoints on the Costa del Sol. Its altitude and limited light pollution make this spot an exceptional setting for astronomical observation. The orientation of the place and the atmospheric conditions of the Malaga summer favor optimal visibility of the night sky, clearly distinguishing the main stars, planets, and constellations of the northern hemisphere.

This natural environment also offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean coast and the mountainous interior of the province, a landscape contrast that complements the experience of those who choose to combine the cable car ascent with enjoying the summer sky.

A journey between sea and mountain on the Costa del Sol

The Benalmádena Cable Car, since its inauguration on March 3, 2000, is one of the most unique tourist attractions in the province of Málaga. Its route, 2,646 meters long, connects the urban core of Arroyo de la Miel with the summit of Mount Calamorro, overcoming an elevation of 636 meters over about 15 minutes. The cabins, with a capacity for four people, move at an average speed of 5 meters per second, offering panoramic views of the coast, the mountains, and, on the clearest days, even the profile of the African coast.
