The rupture of a pipe causes a huge stain in the water of a beach in Benalmádena

A vast stain in the sea water surprised beachgoers this Monday in the beach area between Sunset Beach and Bil Bil Castle, in Benalmádena Costa. The water turned brown and quickly began spreading due to a break in a high-pressure pipeline at the height of Los Patos Hotel, in this same municipality, according to data provided by the City Council.

The same sources pointed out that the leak into the sea is potable water and therefore does not pose any risks. They also noted that the damaged pipeline is managed by the public water company of the Association of Municipalities of the Costa del Sol (Acosol), which "is already carrying out repairs."

Videos are already circulating on social networks showing the impressive flow of water coming from the area where the break occurred. The City Council mentioned that this is due to it being a pipeline that supplies almost half of the population of Benalmádena. "The water naturally channeled towards the stream and flowed into the sea."

Regarding the color of the discharged water, they insisted that it is potable water which has that color "due to the natural dragging of soil into the sea, without any type of contamination since it comes from a high-pressure pipeline." They added that the incident did not cause other problems, "except that being rapid and massive, the release of water into the sea generated return currents."

Initially, yellow flags were raised on the affected beaches as a precaution against swimming, but "later, after the situation returned to normal, the green flag was raised again" while the pipeline repair continues.

The water company of the association reports that after detecting the fault, "the water leak was immediately stopped," which directly affected two high-pressure network intakes in the municipality: Cortijo Mena and El Hiper, although by mid-afternoon it was confirmed that there were no cuts in the water supply of the municipality. "From Acosol, we are working in coordination with the local operator Emabesa to maintain supply with our own resources," they pointed out.

Regarding the cause of the fault, it is known that the affected section of the pipeline is one with "considerable age and deterioration" and that it is "included in the pipeline renewal project that Acosol is preparing for tender," according to Acosol sources.
