Málaga does not end when summer does. As autumn arrives, the province changes pace: temperatures drop, hiking becomes more appealing and inland landscapes begin to take centre stage. It is the perfect time to swap the beach for forests, mountain villages, viewpoints and scenic roads through some of the most beautiful parts of the province.

1. The Copper Forest, Málaga’s ultimate autumn escape

If there is one place that truly represents autumn in Málaga, it is the Genal Valley, in the Serranía de Ronda.

During these weeks, the vast chestnut groves gradually change from green to shades of yellow, red, ochre and copper. This seasonal transformation is known as the Copper Forest, one of the most distinctive autumn landscapes in inland Málaga.

Pujerra, Igualeja and Parauta: three ideal bases

There is no single place from which to experience the Copper Forest.

The colour change spreads across different villages in the Genal Valley and surrounding mountains, with Pujerra, Igualeja and Parauta among the best places to start.

A typical day out can combine a walk through the chestnut groves with lunch in a mountain village and a relaxed stroll through the narrow streets afterwards.

2. Genalguacil and Jubrique: art and hiking among chestnut trees

For those looking for more than just scenery, Genalguacil and Jubrique are a great option.

Genalguacil is known for its open-air contemporary art, while the surrounding countryside offers chestnut forests and mountain paths that are especially attractive in autumn.

A getaway made for slow walking

The area has several trails connecting villages and rural landscapes.

Cooler autumn temperatures make walking far more comfortable, although it is always advisable to check the condition of the paths and the weather forecast before setting out.

3. Sierra de las Nieves: Spanish firs and mountain scenery

Another essential autumn escape is Sierra de las Nieves National Park.

Here, the season is not only about changing leaf colours.

One of the main attractions is the Spanish fir, or pinsapo, one of Málaga’s most emblematic trees.

Yunquera, gateway to the Spanish fir forests

Yunquera is one of the best-known access points to the pinsapo forests and an excellent base for exploring the area.

The combination of mountain scenery, Mediterranean vegetation and Spanish fir forests offers a very different experience from the chestnut landscapes of the Genal Valley.

4. El Torcal de Antequera once the summer heat disappears

El Torcal de Antequera is worth visiting throughout the year, but autumn offers one major advantage: walking its trails is far more comfortable than during the hottest summer days.

Its dramatic limestone formations create an almost otherworldly landscape shaped by erosion over millions of years.

A landscape unlike anywhere else in Málaga

El Torcal offers a complete change from forest scenery.

Its marked routes wind between unusual rock formations, viewpoints and open landscapes overlooking the Antequera countryside.

On misty days, the area can look especially atmospheric, although visitors should remain on marked paths and take extra care in poor visibility.

5. Caminito del Rey and the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes

Autumn is also one of the best times to visit the Caminito del Rey in the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes.

Milder temperatures make the famous cliffside walkway much more comfortable than in high summer and allow visitors to enjoy one of inland Málaga’s most spectacular landscapes.

A trip that needs some planning

Unlike many other natural areas, access to the Caminito del Rey is regulated.

It is advisable to book in advance and check opening times and weather conditions before travelling.

The visit can also be combined with nearby towns such as Álora, Ardales, Antequera or Valle de Abdalajís.

6. Montes de Málaga: nature just outside the city

You do not have to travel far to enjoy an autumn escape.

The Montes de Málaga Natural Park offers hiking trails, forest areas and picnic spots just a short drive from Málaga city.

Hiking followed by traditional mountain food

Autumn is an ideal time to combine a walk with lunch at one of the traditional roadside restaurants in the Montes de Málaga.

The cooler weather makes the area much more pleasant for hiking and spending time outdoors.

7. Ronda and the Serranía: a full-day autumn road trip

Ronda works perfectly as the starting point for an autumn day trip.

The town combines heritage, food and dramatic scenery, while the surrounding Serranía opens the door to smaller white villages and forest landscapes.

Mountain roads and white villages

A road trip through this part of the province can include viewpoints, chestnut groves, traditional villages and quiet mountain roads.

It is one of the easiest ways to experience several sides of inland Málaga in a single day.

8. Alcaucín and Sierra de Tejeda: autumn in the Axarquía

Western Málaga does not have a monopoly on autumn scenery.

In the Axarquía, the area around Alcaucín and Sierra de Tejeda combines mountain landscapes, white villages and walking routes.

The El Alcázar area is one of the best-known starting points for exploring this part of the province once the intense summer heat has passed.

Autumn is also best enjoyed around the table

These getaways also come with a strong seasonal food element.

Autumn brings ingredients and dishes more closely linked to inland Málaga, including chestnuts, mushrooms, stews, local meats, wines and traditional mountain cuisine.

In the Serranía de Ronda and the Genal Valley, chestnuts are particularly important to both the local economy and food culture.

A good excuse to discover smaller villages

One of the best ways to enjoy these routes is not to focus solely on the natural attraction itself.

Stopping for lunch in a small village, wandering through its streets and buying local products can turn a simple hike into a full-day experience.

When is the best time to see autumn colours in Málaga?

There is no exact date.

The intensity of the colours depends on temperature, rainfall and how the season develops each year.

In the Copper Forest, the change usually becomes more noticeable from late October and especially during November, although timing can vary from one year to another.

Eight ways to rediscover Málaga away from the beach

Autumn reveals a completely different side of Málaga from the classic image of the Costa del Sol.

From the chestnut forests of the Genal Valley to the striking rock formations of El Torcal, and from Sierra de las Nieves to Ronda, Caminito del Rey and Montes de Málaga, the province offers enough variety for several different getaways before winter arrives.

And that may be one of its greatest attractions: within just a few hours, you can leave the Mediterranean behind, walk through copper-coloured forests, explore Spanish fir woodlands or finish the day in a quiet white mountain village.
