Candlelight lights up August in Málaga with tributes to Hans Zimmer, Coldplay, Serrat, Queen and Disney
The Royal Hall at the Gran Hotel Miramar will host a programme of candlelit concerts dedicated to major composers, international bands and unforgettable songs from film and pop music.
Music will once again fill one of Málaga’s most elegant venues with candlelight throughout August. The Candlelight series has prepared a programme featuring the soundtracks of Hans Zimmer, the hits of Coldplay and Ed Sheeran, the songs of Joan Manuel Serrat and the music of Queen, The Beatles, Ludovico Einaudi, Phil Collins and Disney.
All the concerts announced for this month will take place in the Royal Hall of the Gran Hotel Miramar, transformed into an intimate setting illuminated by hundreds of candles. Performances will be held on 8, 15, 22 and 23 August, generally with two sessions each day.
Hans Zimmer opens the programme with his best-known soundtracks
The programme will begin on Saturday, 8 August at 7 pm with a tribute to Hans Zimmer, one of the most influential film composers of recent decades.
The repertoire will include pieces associated with films and productions such as Gladiator, Dune, The Lion King, The Pacific and Interstellar.
The session is currently listed as sold out on the official booking platform, although Candlelight has scheduled further concerts dedicated to the composer over the coming months.
Coldplay and Ed Sheeran share the same evening
Later that Saturday, at 9 pm, the focus will shift from film scores to major British pop hits with Candlelight: Coldplay vs. Ed Sheeran. Available tickets start at €46.
The programme will feature instrumental versions of Coldplay songs including Clocks, Viva la Vida and A Sky Full of Stars, alongside Ed Sheeran tracks such as Bad Habits, Photograph and Give Me Love.
The concert offers the opportunity to hear songs usually associated with stadium performances in a much more intimate acoustic format.
Serrat takes centre stage on 15 August
The next concert will take place on Saturday, 15 August at 7 pm, with a tribute to Joan Manuel Serrat.
The Melissando String Quartet will reinterpret some of the Catalan singer-songwriter’s best-known compositions.
The planned programme includes Penélope, Lucía, Poco antes de que den las diez and Mediterráneo, four songs representing different stages of a career that has played an essential role in Spanish popular music. Tickets start at €41.50.
Queen and The Beatles meet by candlelight
The second performance on 15 August will begin at 9 pm and bring together the music of Queen and The Beatles in a single concert. Tickets are available from €21.50.
The setlist will combine Beatles songs such as Here Comes the Sun, Help! and Yesterday with Queen classics including Love of My Life, We Are the Champions and Bohemian Rhapsody.
The same string quartet will perform both parts of the programme.
An evening dedicated to Ludovico Einaudi’s piano music
On Saturday, 22 August at 7 pm, Candlelight will turn its attention to the work of Ludovico Einaudi.
Pianist Natalia Kuchaeva will perform some of the Italian composer’s most popular pieces. Einaudi is widely recognised for his minimalist style and for the frequent use of his music in cinema, television and contemporary culture.
The programme will include works such as I Giorni, Le Onde, Primavera and Fly. Tickets start at €21.50.
Phil Collins reimagined for piano
Two hours later, at 9 pm, Natalia Kuchaeva will remain at the piano for a tribute to Phil Collins.
The concert will offer instrumental interpretations of some of the British artist’s most representative songs.
The planned setlist includes You Can’t Hurry Love, One More Night, Do You Remember? and Another Day in Paradise. Tickets are also available from €21.50.
Disney closes the month with its most romantic songs
The August programme will conclude on Sunday, 23 August with Candlelight: Disney Love Songs, a family-friendly concert centred on melodies from some of the company’s best-known films.
There will be performances at 7 pm and 9 pm.
The repertoire will include music from productions such as Up, Frozen, Toy Story, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. Available tickets start at €43, although availability may change as the dates approach.
