Legend of the Seas Chooses Málaga for Its Presentation Ahead of Its Mediterranean Debut
Royal Caribbean’s new cruise ship, one of the largest ever built, departed from Málaga on a special voyage before beginning its first European season.
The Port of Málaga has once again stepped into the international cruise tourism spotlight with the arrival of Legend of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s third Icon-class ship.
The vessel docked at Terminal A before departing from the Costa del Sol capital on an exclusive voyage to Rome, ahead of the official start of its first European season. Its departure was marked by a fireworks display visible from several points along the Málaga coastline.
A 365-Metre Floating City
The new cruise ship measures 365 metres in length, has 20 decks and features 2,805 cabins. Its maximum capacity exceeds 5,600 passengers, supported by a crew of approximately 2,350 people.
With a gross tonnage of around 251,000 tonnes and an estimated investment of €1.9 billion, the ship ranks among the largest cruise vessels ever built.
Swimming Pools, Waterslides and Ocean-Top Attractions
The ship is divided into eight distinct neighbourhoods and includes a wide range of facilities designed particularly for family holidays.
Its main attractions include seven swimming pools, ten whirlpools and Category 6, described by the cruise line as the largest waterpark at sea. It features six major waterslides, as well as a surf simulator, climbing wall, miniature golf course and dedicated areas for children and teenagers.
Another of its most striking attractions is Crown’s Edge, an experience suspended above the ocean that combines an obstacle course with a zipline positioned high above sea level.
A Garden with More Than 30,000 Plants
The ship also has its own Central Park, an outdoor garden containing more than 30,000 natural plants and surrounded by restaurants, terraces and live-music venues.
At the bow is the AquaDome, a large glass structure offering panoramic sea views, aquatic shows, dining options and relaxation areas.
Málaga Strengthens Its Position as a Cruise Port
The choice of Málaga for the ship’s presentation continues the relationship between Royal Caribbean and the city’s port. The cruise line has previously held events in Málaga involving vessels such as Oasis of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas.
The port facilities had to adapt their mobile gangways to the dimensions and technical characteristics of the new ship to ensure passengers could embark and disembark safely during the special call.
During the summer, Legend of the Seas will operate Mediterranean itineraries departing from Barcelona and Rome, with calls at destinations in Spain, France and Italy. Málaga will also appear on some of its European routes and on its later transatlantic voyage to Fort Lauderdale.
