UMA Summer Courses Return to Marbella with a Focus on Health, History, Science, and Art

Marbella will host from June 30 to July 3 a new edition of the University of Málaga's Summer Courses with a program focused on health, history, science, and art. The mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, emphasized during the presentation, which took place at the Royal Hospital of Mercy, that this initiative "is already part of our cultural identity and has been consolidating since 2008 as a space for knowledge, reflection, and debate." She also highlighted the fact that the town "will again gather prominent experts, who will address relevant and current topics" and noted that, proof of the success of these courses, is that the city already has 130 registered participants.

The mayor thanked UMA "for its firm commitment to our municipality and the extraordinary collaboration we have maintained over all these years." "Marbella is a dynamic, open, innovative city committed to training, talent, and knowledge," Muñoz stated, who was accompanied at the event by the General Director of Culture, Carmen Díaz. Meanwhile, the General Director of the UMA General Foundation, Eugenio Luque, noted the consolidation of an initiative that now reaches its 24th edition across the University and the 18th organized by the Foundation. "We congratulate ourselves and also congratulate the Marbella City Council for reaching yet another edition of the summer courses," he stated.

Luque explained that the Marbella program will include five courses and one masterclass, with the participation of about thirty speakers. He also mentioned that Marbella currently has the highest number of registrations and highlighted among the featured content courses on global health, oncology in the 21st century, democracy, the universe of Picasso, and the so-called 'Cosmic Ballet,' in addition to a masterclass given by the renowned paleoanthropologist and communicator Juan Luis Arsuaga.

Luque also thanked the City Council for its support as the main sponsor and the collaboration of entities such as the UMA Chair of Global Health, the Bisturí Solidario Foundation, the Museum of Contemporary Spanish Engraving, and the Malaga Astronomy Society. Additionally, the Vice Chancellor of Economic Planning and Strategy at the University of Málaga, Zaida Díaz, highlighted the role of Marbella as a reference site for this academic activity. "Marbella not only hosts these courses, it enhances them, becoming the perfect framework where the academic excellence of UMA connects with society," she pointed out. The university official praised a program that "spans from the cosmos to the human being itself," and invited both residents and visitors to actively participate in the various training proposals. Today's event also featured the participation of the director of the 'Global Health, Solidarity Medicine, and International Cooperation' course, Francisco Sendra, and the president of the Malaga Astronomy Society, Rosa López, who emphasized the relevance of the subjects.

Program

The program will start on June 30 with the courses 'The Cosmic Ballet: Solar Eclipses and Planetary Exploration', directed by the Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Málaga, Javier Laserna, and 'Oncology of the 21st Century: Towards Personalized Medicine', coordinated by the Professor of Oncology at UMA and scientific director of CITAC, Emilio Alba. That same day will also begin the seminar 'Picasso Superstar: Re-readings and Critiques from the Present', taught by the Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Málaga, María Jesús Martínez Silvente, and which will take place over two days. The program will continue on July 2 with the course 'Global Health, Solidarity Medicine, and International Cooperation', directed by Francisco Sendra, director of the Chair of Global and Solidarity Health at the University of Málaga, and with 'The Crises of Democracy', which will be held on July 2 and 3 under the direction of the Professor of Political Science Manuel Arias Maldonado.

The academic offerings will be completed on July 3 with the master class 'The Pleasure of Admiration: Human Evolution, Science, and Future', led by the renowned paleontologist, communicator, and writer Juan Luis Arsuaga, Professor of Paleontology at the Complutense University of Madrid and scientific director of the Museum of Human Evolution. The courses will mainly take place at the Royal Hospital of Mercy, while the seminar dedicated to Picasso will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Spanish Engraving.
