Estepona will host a charity march to help people at risk of suicide

The city of Estepona will host the charity march 'Darkness into light' on the upcoming May 9th, an event that will take place in other parts of the world to aid people at risk of suicide and will cover a five-kilometer route, as reported this Tuesday by the Councilor for Citizen Participation, María Aguilar.

This was highlighted by the councilwoman at the event presentation, where she was accompanied by the president of the Association of Relatives and People with Mental Illness of the Costa del Sol (AFESOL), Cristian González.

The municipal official emphasized the charitable nature of this activity, which like in previous years will raise funds that will be allocated to awareness and suicide prevention programs, as well as for the intervention and support of individuals who have experienced the loss of a loved one due to this cause.

Moreover, the councilwoman made a call for participation and expressed the city council's intention to continue supporting this cause and collaborating with all types of non-profit associations aimed at helping people with problems.

Five-kilometer march

For his part, Cristian Rodríguez explained that this is a non-competitive 5-kilometer march, in which people of all ages can participate. Participants will start from the seaside promenade, near the Malva Beach bar, and will finish at the Mirador del Carmen.

He also stated that it has a symbolic character because it begins at 06:00 AM and ends at sunrise, "thus representing the journey from darkness into light."

Furthermore, the president of AFESOL explained that 'Darkness into light' originated in Dublin 17 years ago, promoted by the 'Pieta House' foundation. In 2025, it achieved participation of more than 200,000 people worldwide. He also stressed the importance of continuing to support this initiative, as data from the National Institute of Statistics indicates suicide as one of the leading extreme causes of mortality in Spain.

Registration, which costs 22 euros, is now open online through the website www.eventmaster.ie, or in person at the Afesol Mental Health offices in Estepona and Benalmádena, as well as on the day of the walk at the starting point from 04:00 in the morning.
