The Estepona climbing center will host the '2026 Spanish University Climbing Championship'

The Estepona municipal climbing center will host the '2026 Spanish University Climbing Championship', an event that will take place in the municipality from April 14 to 16 with the participation of a hundred athletes, as reported this Friday by the City Council.

The event is organized by the University of Málaga, in collaboration with the City Council, and was presented today by the mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, who highlighted the versatility of the sports space to allow the hosting of sports events and the practice of this sport.

The program of the climbing championship will start on April 14, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with the delivery of accreditations at the Municipal Football Stadium Francisco Muñoz Pérez. The next day, April 15, the bouldering competition will take place, from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM, followed by the trophy presentation at 7:00 PM. The lead climbing competition will follow on the 16th, from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, ending with the trophy presentation at 6:00 PM.

Values of the competition

The main objective of the 'Spanish University Climbing Championship' is to promote the practice of this sport within the university context, promoting values such as effort, personal improvement, camaraderie, and fair play, as stated by the City Council in a statement.

Additionally, the championship aims to offer a high-level competition space, allowing university students to demonstrate their technical and physical abilities in a safe and regulated environment.

Among the specific objectives are to encourage the active participation of the university community in sports activities, contribute to the development and dissemination of climbing as an emerging sports discipline, and strengthen relationships between universities through sport.

Similarly, it aims to promote equality of opportunities, inclusion, and respect among participants, as well as ensuring efficient organization that meets established sports and safety standards.

The event, which will involve around 100 athletes, is part of the Spanish university championships, which are convened each year by the Higher Sports Council, and the organization has been entrusted to the ten public universities of Andalusia.

Since 2024, Estepona has an outdoor climbing wall, which allows hosting such competitions. With a total surface area of 662 square meters, the space is divided into three areas specifically designed to host each modality of this sport: lead (363 m2), speed (115 m2), and bouldering (184 m2).
