Estepona warns that dumping waste in illegal landfills carries fines starting from 2,000 euros.

The Estepona City Council removes about 12.5 tons of waste daily from illegal landfills located away from the urban area, where dumping waste can lead to fines ranging from 2,000 euros to one million if the waste is hazardous, as reported by the Council this Wednesday.

Thus, the City Council has highlighted in a statement that it offers a free service for the collection of furniture and household items for citizens, to ensure the cleanliness of public roads and prevent illegal landfills in the urban area and outskirts.

To use this collection service for furniture, household items, or appliances, interested parties can contact the municipal cleaning department, through the Green Line app or by phone at 951 70 38 49, where staff will indicate the date and time to place their items on the public road for organized collection.

Illegal Landfills

In this regard, the City Council has emphasized that an average of 12.5 tons of waste is collected daily from illegal landfills in areas far from the urban center, which is almost 20% more than what was removed last year.

It has been specified that this problem causes "significant damage" to the outskirts and the environment, noting that such infractions carry fines of up to 2,000 euros if considered minor, while they range between this amount and 100,000 euros if serious, exceeding one million euros if hazardous waste is deposited.

The Council has highlighted that creating or using illegal landfills requires a "significant effort" from the municipal cleaning service workers, besides harming the residents living nearby and the natural surroundings where they are located.

It added that this "lack of civility" can cause damage or safety issues for people walking or driving near these illegal waste deposits, as sharp objects, glass, or bulky items may be thrown there.

Clean Point

On the other hand, the City Council promotes the disposal of such waste at the Clean Point in Estepona, where domestic waste that can be recycled, either for its material and energy value or due to its hazardous nature, which makes it unsuitable for disposal in conventional bins, can be left.

The Council has reminded that using this public facility results in a 3% reduction on the full amount of the garbage fee, for those taxpayers who deposit at an authorized clean point at least three times a year, waste suitable for which there are no bins on the public road.

For this, the interested party must annually request to benefit from the tax reduction during the first quarter of the tax period, and present the documentation that reports on the deposits made throughout the previous year. This should be done at the headquarters of the Provincial Collection Agency (C/Luis Braille, Puertosol building). In this regard, it is necessary to present the standardized application form, a copy of the previous year's Garbage Collection Fee receipt, and copies of the receipts for each deposit, which will be provided at the Clean Point with each contribution made.
