"Care with Another Perspective," the initiative that strengthens attention to people with visual disabilities in Vélez

Caring through the eyes of another, this is the title of the initiative promoted by the Municipal Enterprise for Services, Housing, Infrastructure, and Promotion (Emvipsa) of Vélez-Málaga, in collaboration with the local ONCE organization. According to a statement from the municipal entity, this proposal is aimed at the company's staff who assist visually impaired individuals on a daily basis.

For this reason, the first deputy mayor of Vélez-Málaga and councilor in charge of Emvipsa, Jesús Pérez Atencia, explained that this proposal is part of the celebration of the ONCE Social Group week, and is designed to focus on what they described as "an essential aspect of care and support: empathy with the user."

Pérez Atencia pointed out that caring "is not only about assisting a person with their daily needs, but also about understanding their reality, respecting their timing, supporting their abilities, and always promoting their autonomy."

The methodology employed

In this regard, the activity aims for Emvipsa professionals to get closer to the everyday experiences of people with low vision or total blindness. To achieve this, they have directly understood the difficulties, sensations, and emotions they may face in everyday situations.

So much so that they detailed that, after a theoretical introduction, participants will engage in various simulation dynamics with visual limitations, alternating roles between the guided person and the guide. This methodology, as explained, will also provide a "deeper" insight into the actual needs of visually impaired individuals and thus improve the quality of the support provided.

The session will also address key issues such as proper guiding techniques, descriptive communication, and attitudes that help reinforce safety, trust, and dignity of the accompanied person.

Pérez Atencia emphasized that this activity represents an opportunity to continue advancing towards more humane, close, and transformative care. “Caring through the eyes of another invites us precisely to that: to see from the perspective of the person in front of us in order to provide better care,” he highlighted.

With this initiative, Emvipsa, as stated, reaffirms its commitment to the continuous training of its staff and to improving the care provided to the residents of the municipality, promoting a model of support based on respect, sensitivity, and personal autonomy.
