More than 200 people will participate in the historical reenactment honoring Salvador Manzanares and Pedro Manrique in Estepona.

Over 200 people will participate in the historical reenactment honoring Salvador Manzanares and Pedro Manrique in Estepona, which will take place on March 6, 7, and 8 in the city, as announced this Tuesday by the Councilor for Citizen Participation, María Aguilar.

This was highlighted by the councilor at the event presentation, where she was accompanied by the Estepona historian, José María Guerrero; and representatives of the cultural association ‘Manzanares Estepona 1831’.

This time, 12 groups from Andalusia will participate in the historical reenactment, including the Cultural Association Torrijos 1831 (Málaga), the Historical Reenactment Association Bandoleros de Grazalema, the Historical-Cultural Association Quema de Algarrobo, A. C. José María El Tempranillo-Bandoleros de Alameda, the Association Battle of Puente de Montejaque, A.C. Bandoleros de Despeñaperros; A.C. Algodonales Libre de Cádiz; Bandolero Gallery of El Borge; A.C. Los Coloraos de Almería; A.C. Manifiesto Cortesano de Cortes de la Frontera; A.C. Málaga Recreadora; and A.C. Manzanares Estepona 1831, as the host entity.

The events will begin next Friday, March 6, starting at 18:30 with a cultural proclamation by the renowned researcher Ildefonso Navarro, a historian and municipal archaeologist of Estepona, at the Casa de las Tejerinas in Estepona.

The program will continue on March 7, at 11:00, with a romantic-liberal parade centered at the theatrical space set up in Antonia Guerrero square. In this space, the attending associations will perform passages and scenes of romantic-liberal and bandit history, related to the events that took place in their respective towns, their culture, and traditions.

Reenactment of Manzanares' Death

On March 8, the streets of Estepona will be overtaken by the historical reenactment and the Romantic-Liberal period parade, in which participants dressed in the style of 1831, will stage the death of Manzanares, the capture of the liberal troops, and the execution on the beach. Additionally, a tribute will be held for Pedro Manrique, a young man from Estepona who was an agent for General Torrijos and the Gibraltar Board in 1831, born on Santa Ana street.       

The procession will start at 11.00 from the Botanical-Orchid Park, where the first scene will take place, continue along Terraza street, Plaza del Reloj (12.00) where the main events will unfold, continue with the tribute to Pedro Manrique at Santa Ana street with Calle Real (12.45), proceed to La Rada beach (13.15), where the beach occupation and the execution of the liberals (13.45) will take place, ending at the Historic Cemetery of Estepona, at the tomb of Salvador Manzanares and his men (14.00).

The Councilor for Citizen Participation has encouraged all citizens to participate in all these planned activities, as it is an “entertaining and educational” way to learn about part of the city's past. Additionally, she thanked the cultural association ‘Manzanares Estepona 1831’ for their involvement in this project, which year after year continues to grow with the participation of more Andalusian associations and groups that recreate episodes from history.
