Estepona starts the process to expand the Virgen del Carmen senior residence

The Estepona City Council has initiated procedures to expand the current facilities of the Virgen del Carmen senior residence, an action that will be financed by auctioning a plot owned by the center's foundation, valued at 777,160 euros, as reported by the City Council this Friday.

The first step will be the notarial auction of a plot owned by the foundation-residence itself, so that the funds obtained will be allocated to the expansion, to provide more space to this care center that has been operational since the 1980s.

The Board of the foundation is chaired by the mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, and includes representatives from the municipal government team, opposition parties, and entities such as the Association of Brotherhoods and Fraternities, the Agricultural Cooperative, the Fishermen's Guild, and the Antonia Guerrero Foundation.

According to the City Council, this body agreed in its meeting last October to "authorize the sale of the plot by auction," explaining that "it is a plot owned by said foundation that cannot be used for care purposes."

Therefore, the board's agreement includes the "alienation" of this plot and "the subsequent allocation of the funds obtained to the expansion work of the senior residence," they added.

Specifically, the City Council has specified that the plot is located in the El Capricho urbanization, has a "total area of 483 square meters" and has been "valued at 777,160 euros."

The Virgen del Carmen Foundation-Residence is a non-profit entity located in Estepona and created by the City Council in a plenary session in 1984. Since 1987, it has been dedicated to the comprehensive care and attention of the elderly.

The Estepona City Council actively collaborates with this residence and "has assumed for years part of the maintenance costs of this facility, such as electricity supply and improvement and maintenance works in this enclosure."

Currently, the center has a total of 153 places, of which 110 are contracted with the Andalusian Regional Government and 43 are private. The senior residence serves the most needy in Estepona and the region, who lack the material and functional resources to continue in their homes.

Since 2010, it has had a Day Stay Unit (UED) where workshops, activities, and specific therapies are carried out to improve the biopsychosocial situation of the elderly and residents, the City Council has added.
