Meteorology investigates whether the Mijas phenomenon was a tornado, a waterspout, or a 'downburst'

The strong gusts of wind, of up to 130 kilometers per hour, that have battered the coast of Mijas last night have caused numerous damages, especially in the area of La Cala, with the toppling of part of the Christmas lighting, uprooted trees, fallen branches, and even boats taken out of the water and dragged ashore. The Meteorological Agency is investigating whether the phenomenon was a tornado or not, as explained to this newspaper by the spokesperson, Jesús Riesco. For now, it is a "provisional assessment."

Technicians from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) have traveled to the area to conduct a field study to determine what type of meteorological episode occurred and assess its intensity, especially regarding the maximum wind gusts.

Riesco has called for caution, as it has not yet been confirmed whether it was merely strong gusts associated with a storm, a small tornado, or a downburst, phenomena that can present similar characteristics.

It is also not ruled out, in the words of the Aemet spokesperson, that it could have been a waterspout that came in from the sea or developed near the coast, although there is also the possibility that it originated on land.

He also reminds that this type of phenomenon is characterized by a very short duration, lasting just a few minutes, and by having limited spatial dimensions, which makes detection through usual meteorological observation systems difficult. Therefore, on-site analysis is key to clarifying what happened.

The episode occurred in the context of a quite intense storm, with very rapid movement, a scenario in which such strong winds are typical. Although not usual in specific areas like those affected, they are common on the Mediterranean coast during autumn.

Rain could return on Saturday

Regarding the weather outlook for the coming days, Jesús Riesco has indicated that this Tuesday will still see some instability, with the possibility of showers in the afternoon in inland areas, being much less likely on the coast. For Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, no precipitation is expected in the province of Málaga, although it could return by Saturday.
