Marbella Joins American Express's Select List of Trendy Travel Destinations for 2026

Marbella never goes out of style. The select annual list from American Express Travel, which highlights the top ten trending destinations for travel in 2026, includes ... the city of Marbella as one of these must-visit places. It is also the only spot in Spain to make it into this report, which is based on a survey about where the users of this credit card are most eager to go next year.

This annual list of trendy destinations, just published by Forbes magazine, highlights essential places to visit worldwide and confirms that 89% of those with an American Express want to discover new places. This publication includes statements from Audrey Hendley, president of American Express Travel, who comments on this year's selection that "travelers are looking for hotels that reflect the destinations they explore, with meaningful local details, unique activities, and memorable culinary experiences."

The best travel destinations and hotels for 2026, according to American Express customers' bookings, are the Himalayas; the Irish city of Killarney, on the shores of Lough Leane in the southwest of the country; Las Vegas; Marrakech; Marbella; the Japanese islands of Okinawa; Panama City; Papagayo Peninsula in Costa Rica; San Juan Mountains in the American state of Colorado; and St. Julians in Malta.

In the case of Marbella, it stands out that "from the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean to the Sierra Blanca, it offers a combination of luxury and the old-time Andalusian charm, complemented by internationally renowned restaurants, exclusive shops, rich history, and a vibrant culture." And for accommodation, it highlights La Fonda Heritage Hotel, which "is located in a historic square overlooking the Church of Santo Cristo and was formerly a school. The three historic buildings that make up La Fonda date back to the early sixteenth century and feature interior courtyards and gardens. With only 20 rooms, this intimate hotel also houses the award-winning haute cuisine restaurant La Fonda."

The new listing makes it clear that travelers' priorities are changing and that when they take a getaway, they want to feel special by seeking unique stays, memorable places, and properties with a special charm, instead of traditional resort options. Additionally, it specifies that "gastronomy is becoming a decisive factor, with local restaurants and social activities playing a significant role in choosing the destination, along with entertainment and sports events." For Millennial and Generation Z travelers, in particular, family-friendly places and services are among the most important features when selecting a hotel.
