The swimmer from Mijas, Duane da Rocha, will name the pool in La Cala.

The full council of the Mijas Town Hall has approved this Wednesday to name the La Cala swimming pool after the swimmer from Mijas, Duane da Rocha, a measure that was passed unanimously by the political groups that make up the municipal corporation, as reported by the Council.

The Councilor for Sports, María Francisca Alarcón, motivated the proposal endorsed by the Plenary based on the international successes of the athlete and because she has always proudly represented the name of Mijas.

Thus, the Council highlighted in a statement that Da Rocha, originally from Brasilia (Brazil) and a resident of Mijas from a very young age, holds as her greatest achievement the 2014 European Championship in Berlin in the 200-meter backstroke, her specialty.

The young woman was also an Olympian in London 2012, where she competed in the semifinals of the 200 backstroke, and in Rio 2016. Additionally, she has more than 60 national titles and has broken the Spanish records for the 200 backstroke and 100 backstroke.

Bonuses and tax support for the youth

On the other hand, the Plenary unanimously passed a motion from the PP group urging the Government of Spain to halt the planned increase in contributions for self-employed workers, scheduled for the period 2026-2028.

The motion states that the situation is “particularly severe” in Mijas, “where the productive fabric is significantly supported by nearly 9,000 Mijas residents affiliated with the Social Security as self-employed, representing an essential pillar of employment in sectors such as tourism, hospitality, commerce, construction, and professional services.”

In this regard, the agreements contained in the motion focus on showing the rejection of the Council to the planned increase in contributions “for being unfair, disproportionate, and harmful to the provincial economy”; or in requesting that the minimum rates for the lower income brackets be maintained or reduced, and that bonuses and tax support be adopted for the youth, women, workers in rural areas, and new self-employed individuals.

Manifesto in support of November 25

The Plenary also approved the proposal from the Department of Families and Equal Opportunities related to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, a commemoration that took place yesterday, November 25, and included the reading of a manifesto by the mayor, Ana Mata, in Las Lagunas. The text was approved with votes in favor from the groups of PP, C´s, PMP, and PSOE, and against from Vox.

Furthermore, the Plenary gave the green light to the approval of the collaboration agreement between the Metropolitan Transport Consortium of the Málaga Area and the Mijas Town Hall for the financing of the evening M-114 line (Mijas-Expansion of the Teatinos university campus) for the fiscal years 2025 and 2026. This motion received favorable votes from the government team and abstentions from PSOE and CS.
