Studio Ghibli returns to cinemas in Málaga: six Hayao Miyazaki films this September and October

Studio Ghibli fans have a date with the big screen over the coming weeks in Málaga. mk2 Cinemas will bring back six of Hayao Miyazaki’s best-known films in a special season running from 19 September to 25 October 2026.

The retrospective will be shown at two cinemas in the province: mk2 Málaga Nostrum, in Málaga city, and mk2 Miramar, in Fuengirola. Each weekend will be dedicated to a different film, offering audiences the chance to revisit more than two decades of Miyazaki’s work.

Screenings will be available both dubbed into Spanish and in the original Japanese version with Spanish subtitles.

Six weekends exploring the world of Miyazaki

The season begins with one of the director’s most iconic films, Princess Mononoke, originally released in 1997.

From there, the programme will move chronologically through some of Miyazaki’s most important works before ending with The Boy and the Heron, released in 2023.

The full programme is:

• 19 and 20 September: Princess Mononoke
• 26 and 27 September: Spirited Away
• 3 and 4 October: Howl’s Moving Castle
• 10 and 11 October: Ponyo
• 12 October: special screening of Ponyo
• 17 and 18 October: The Wind Rises
• 24 and 25 October: The Boy and the Heron

The selection covers 26 years of Miyazaki’s filmmaking, from his major late-1990s classics to his most recent feature.

Where to watch the Studio Ghibli films in Málaga

Two cinemas in Málaga province will take part in the season.

In Málaga city, screenings will be held at mk2 Málaga Nostrum, on Calle Jaén, 1.

On the Costa del Sol, the films will also be shown at mk2 Miramar in Fuengirola, located by the Miramar shopping centre on Avenida de la Encarnación.

Both cinemas will follow the same screening schedule throughout the six weekends.

Screening times: dubbed and original Japanese versions

On Saturdays, there will be a 12:00 pm screening dubbed into Spanish.

On Sundays, audiences will have two options: a 12:00 pm Spanish-dubbed screening and an 8:00 pm screening in the original Japanese with Spanish subtitles.

Ponyo will also have a special additional screening on Monday, 12 October at 12:00 pm, again dubbed into Spanish.

The combination makes the season suitable both for families and younger audiences, as well as viewers who prefer to experience the films with their original Japanese voice performances.

From ‘Spirited Away’ to ‘The Boy and the Heron’

Few animation careers have achieved the international influence of Hayao Miyazaki.

The season includes Spirited Away, one of Studio Ghibli’s landmark films and an Academy Award winner for Best Animated Feature, alongside titles such as Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo and The Wind Rises.

The retrospective will conclude with The Boy and the Heron, the film that brought Miyazaki another Academy Award for Best Animated Feature more than two decades after Spirited Away.

Watching these titles again in a cinema also offers a very different experience from seeing them at home, particularly given the importance of the animation, landscapes, music and visual detail in Miyazaki’s work.

A season coinciding with Studio Ghibli’s Princess of Asturias Award

The screenings come during a particularly significant year for the Japanese studio.

Studio Ghibli has received the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities, recognising more than four decades of work and its ability to create stories that have connected with audiences across different generations and cultures.

The cinema season will conclude in late October, making the coming weeks an ideal opportunity to rediscover on the big screen some of the films that helped establish Studio Ghibli as one of the world’s most influential animation studios.

A different cinema plan for autumn in Málaga

For anyone looking for cultural plans in Málaga and Fuengirola this September and October, the retrospective offers six consecutive weekends inside Miyazaki’s unmistakable universe.

Nature, fantasy worlds, unforgettable characters and some of Japanese animation’s most recognisable images will return to the cinema, from the forests of Princess Mononoke to the mysterious world of The Boy and the Heron.
