Málaga school calendar 2026-2027: when classes start and all the main holiday dates

The summer holidays are coming to an end and thousands of families across Málaga are beginning to reorganise schedules, buy school supplies and focus on one of the most important dates of September: the first day back in class.

The 2026-2027 school year officially begins on 1 September 2026, although that does not mean every pupil will return to school on the same day. The start of classes will be staggered depending on the level of education, with some students not beginning until 21 September.

The calendar approved by Málaga’s Territorial Education Delegation also sets out the Christmas holidays, the traditional Semana Blanca break, Easter holidays and the main non-school days families will need to keep in mind throughout the year.

Children aged 0 to 3 will be the first to return

The return to school will begin on Thursday 3 September for the first cycle of Infant Education, covering nursery education for children aged 0 to 3.

This stage follows a slightly different calendar from the rest of the education system. Nursery schools operate for most of the year, excluding August and official holidays, and their final ordinary teaching day will be 29 July 2027.

For many families, this will therefore mark the first major return to routine after the summer.

Infant and Primary pupils return on 10 September

The next important date will be Thursday 10 September 2026.

Classes will begin that day for the second cycle of Infant Education —ages 3 to 6—, Primary Education and Special Education.

The calendar establishes a minimum of 178 teaching days and 890 hours of direct teaching for these stages, including break times.

The first day may also be used specifically to welcome pupils, while schools are allowed to introduce flexible timetables for some younger children who are attending for the first time in order to help with their adjustment.

Secondary, Bachillerato and vocational training start on 15 September

Older students will have a few extra days of summer holidays.

Tuesday 15 September will mark the start of classes for Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO), Bachillerato and vocational training, including basic, intermediate and higher-level programmes.

Adult education and several music, dance and art programmes will also begin on the same date.

This means almost two weeks will separate the start of nursery education from the return of Secondary students, something families with children at different educational stages may need to take into account when planning September.

Language schools and higher arts education start last

The staggered return will conclude on Monday 21 September.

That is when Official Language Schools (EOI) and higher artistic education programmes are scheduled to begin classes.

The main back-to-school dates in Málaga are therefore spread across four days in September: 3, 10, 15 and 21 September.

When are the Christmas holidays?

The first major break of the school year will arrive at the end of December.

The Christmas holidays will run from 23 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, inclusive.

This means the final school day before Christmas will generally be Tuesday 22 December, with classes resuming after Three Kings’ Day.

There will also be several public holidays during the first term, including 12 October, 2 November —as All Saints’ Day falls on a Sunday— and 7 and 8 December.

Semana Blanca 2027: one of Málaga’s most anticipated school breaks

One of the features that makes Málaga’s school calendar particularly distinctive is the traditional Semana Blanca break.

The official resolution establishes the period from 22 to 26 February 2027 as non-school days.

The calendar specifically identifies 22 to 25 February as Semana Blanca, while Friday 26 February is reserved for the Education Community Day.

In addition, 28 February, Andalusia Day, falls on a Sunday in 2027, so the public holiday will be transferred to Monday 1 March.

Combined with the weekends, this will create a particularly long break for many Málaga families at the end of February and beginning of March.

When is Easter in 2027?

The next major school holiday will arrive only a few weeks later.

The Easter break will run from 22 to 28 March 2027, inclusive.

This period also includes Maundy Thursday on 25 March and Good Friday on 26 March.

Depending on how local public holidays fall within the school year, some schools may also have 29 March and/or 3 May as non-school days.

The exact situation will vary between municipalities. If both local holidays already fall on school days, those dates will be observed instead. If one or both fall outside the teaching calendar, alternative non-school days may be assigned.

When do schools finish in Málaga?

For most pupils, the school year will finish on 24 June 2027.

That will be the final teaching day for Infant, Primary, Special Education, ESO and first-year Bachillerato students, along with most other education programmes.

Students in the second year of Bachillerato will finish earlier, with ordinary classes ending on 24 May 2027, allowing time for recovery activities and preparation for university entrance examinations.

The first cycle of Infant Education will follow its own calendar and continue ordinary activity until 29 July.

The dates families should save now

For Málaga families, the 2026-2027 calendar includes several particularly important periods: the staggered return during September, the Christmas holidays beginning on 23 December, the extended break around Semana Blanca and Andalusia Day, and Easter from 22 March.

It will also be important to check each school’s individual calendar, as local public holidays can create differences between municipalities across Málaga province.

With these dates now confirmed, the countdown begins to swap beaches, summer camps and long evenings for backpacks, early mornings and classrooms.
