Moments Festival turns Málaga into a capital of underground culture with more than 130 activities

Málaga will once again become a meeting point for independent creativity this autumn with the return of Moments Festival. Its 13th edition will offer more than 130 activities and bring together over 200 artists across around 40 venues in Málaga and Madrid, connecting local talent with national and international figures.

The Málaga programme will run from 9 October to 15 November, while Madrid will host its part of the festival from 15 to 24 October. Exhibitions, concerts, talks, workshops, screenings and urban art projects will form an agenda that champions a different way of producing and sharing culture, far removed from mainstream commercial circuits.

A programme rooted in street culture

Moments Festival brings together disciplines such as skateboarding, punk, rock, jazz, flamenco, electronic music, graffiti, surfing and self-publishing, placing them in dialogue with photography, design, cinema, craftsmanship, literature and contemporary thought.

At the heart of the project is the D.I.Y. —do it yourself— philosophy, along with the creation of networks between artists, cultural venues and audiences.

The festival grew out of Málaga’s alternative scene linked to skateboarding and independent music. Its founder and organiser, Juanjo Fuentes, explains that the project emerged from a generation of young people who, during the late 1980s and early 1990s, began organising concerts, publishing fanzines and launching their own initiatives because the city offered few similar opportunities.

That spirit remains present more than a decade later. Moments does not simply use the city as a backdrop, but turns it into an active part of a temporary community where creators from different generations and disciplines can meet, exchange ideas and develop new collaborations.

Geologist, Nikka and Modelo de Respuesta Polar among the musical highlights

Music will play a major role in the 2026 programme. One of the headline events will be a concert by Geologist, the stage name of Animal Collective member Brian Weitz, who will give an exclusive performance at the Museo Picasso Málaga’s Christine Ruiz-Picasso Auditorium on 13 November.

The line-up will also feature artists including Nikka, LaCruz, Los Manises, Sorry Kini and Nadie Patín, as well as a celebration marking the tenth anniversary of Modelo de Respuesta Polar.

The closing event will take place on 14 November at the Museo Picasso Málaga, with an evening of audiovisual experimentation featuring Nikka, LaCruz and Dentro, a project by Sole Villalba and Belén S. Guzmán.

Experimental sound will also have its own space through Music Weekend & Avant Sounds, a section devoted to sound creation, modular synthesis and audiovisual formats during the final days of the festival.

Three weekends devoted to design, photography and music

One of the defining features of this edition will be the organisation of the programme into several themed weekends.

The first will be Design & Film Weekend, held from 29 October to 1 November, with activities focused on art direction, typography, alternative cinema, illustration and creative processes.

The programme includes sessions with Realmente Bravo, Leonor Díaz and filmmaker Chema García Ibarra, as well as the Letterism workshop led by Dano and Ausias Pérez.

Artist Regina Dejiménez will explore the journey from intuition to contemporary textile art, while Iker Muro will examine the relationship between mural painting and clothing design.

The Photo Weekend, taking place from 6 to 8 November at MEET, will bring together figures such as Txema Salvans, Miguel Trillo, Nikita Teryoshin and Sofía Moro.

Its programme will combine talks, masterclasses, workshops, urban walks and discussions about documentary photography, portraiture and youth subcultures.

Miguel Trillo will receive the Moments Award 2026, recognising his career documenting Spain’s youth and music scenes. The photographer will also lead a workshop examining the relationship between images and subcultures.

Cult cinema, textile art and urban photography

The film programme will include screenings connected to music and alternative cultures, including a documentary about Butthole Surfers.

These sessions will be accompanied by conversations about independent cinema and activities exploring the links between image, sound, design and popular culture.

The visual arts section will feature names such as Andy Jenkins, a figure closely associated with skateboarding design, alongside exhibitions including a tribute marking 20 years of Drunk-O-Rama.

The programme will also include Trazo Jondo, a project combining illustration and flamenco.

In total, the organisers have announced 27 exhibitions, 37 talks, 20 workshops, 36 live performances, eight film activities and one urban art intervention, as well as a range of additional events spread across the city.

A festival built from Málaga

Although Moments has expanded to Madrid, the project remains firmly rooted in Málaga.

Juanjo Fuentes describes the festival as a space for defending culture, friendship and the city’s identity in the face of increasing homogenisation, algorithms and the constant pursuit of social-media impact.

The organiser acknowledges that securing funding and coordinating an independent project involving so many artists, activities and venues remains one of its greatest challenges.

However, he considers the friendships and connections created between generations and disciplines to be the greatest reward of every edition.

After twelve editions, Moments Festival has established itself as a platform for discovering work outside conventional cultural circuits. Its return in 2026 promises to fill Málaga once again with music, images, workshops and encounters in which the underground spirit is presented not as an aesthetic from the past, but as a contemporary way of building community.
