Málaga to bid farewell to Legend of the Seas with fireworks before its maiden voyage to Rome

Málaga is preparing for a special evening by the sea. The city’s port will serve as the departure point for the maiden voyage of Legend of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International’s new ship and the third vessel in the innovative Icon Class.

The cruise ship is scheduled to leave the port on Monday, 29 June, at 10:00 pm, heading towards Rome via the Italian port of Civitavecchia. A fireworks display will take place at approximately 10:20 pm to mark its departure and will be visible from different areas along Málaga’s coastline.

The visit represents another significant milestone for cruise tourism on the Costa del Sol and reinforces Málaga’s position as a strategic Mediterranean port for major international cruise companies.

What time will the fireworks take place in Málaga?

Legend of the Seas is scheduled to depart from the Port of Málaga at 10:00 pm. Around 20 minutes later, at approximately 10:20 pm, the fireworks display prepared to bid farewell to the ship will begin.

The fireworks will be visible from several points along the city’s coast. Areas close to the port, including Palmeral de las Sorpresas, Muelle Uno, La Malagueta and other open spaces along the seafront, may offer good views of both the ship’s departure and the display.

As the event is linked to a port operation, the schedule may be subject to minor changes for technical or navigational reasons.

The maiden voyage begins in Málaga

Legend of the Seas is expected to arrive at Cruise Terminal A during the early hours of the morning, where the necessary preparations will be carried out ahead of its first passenger voyage.

During the day, local and port authorities will present a commemorative plaque to the ship’s captain. The ceremony will mark the vessel’s first visit to Málaga and its arrival on the Mediterranean cruise scene.

The ship will later depart for Italy on a special voyage ahead of the start of its regular European programme. Throughout the summer, it will operate several Mediterranean itineraries from Barcelona and Rome.

Legend of the Seas belongs to Royal Caribbean’s Icon Class, the company’s most innovative category of ships. It has been designed as a vast floating holiday destination, with spaces aimed at families, couples and travellers seeking large-scale leisure experiences.

One of its main attractions is Category 6, which the company describes as the largest water park ever installed on a cruise ship. The area features several slides and high-adrenaline experiences at sea.

The ship also has seven swimming pools, ten hot tubs and eight themed neighbourhoods with different atmospheres. One of them is Central Park, an open-air garden featuring more than 30,000 real plants, restaurants and live music spaces.

Another of its most striking attractions is Crown’s Edge, an adventure walkway located around 47 metres above sea level. The experience combines height, panoramic views and a structure that extends over the side of the ship.

Dining, entertainment and activities for the whole family

Food and drink are also central to the Legend of the Seas experience. The ship offers more than 40 different dining and drinking options, including restaurants, food markets, bars and themed venues.

Its entertainment programme includes musicals, aquatic shows, aerial performances, live music and ice productions. Announced shows include an adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and a live version of the television programme America’s Got Talent.

Families can enjoy dedicated areas such as Surfside, a neighbourhood designed for spending the day with children, as well as swimming pools, water parks and age-specific clubs.

The entertainment offering also includes surf simulators, miniature golf, climbing areas and Absolute Zero, the largest ice-skating rink installed on a cruise ship.

Málaga strengthens its position as a leading cruise port

The choice of Málaga as the departure point for this voyage reflects the long-standing relationship between the city and Royal Caribbean. The company has previously presented other major ships from its fleet at the Port of Málaga.

The arrival of Legend of the Seas also provides significant international exposure for the city. An operation of this scale generates activity across cruise terminals, transport services, hotels, restaurants, shops and other businesses linked to passengers and crew members.

To accommodate the new ship, the cruise terminal has carried out several technical adaptations, including adjustments to its mobile boarding bridges to ensure safe and efficient operations.

The farewell fireworks display will allow residents and visitors to take part in the occasion and watch one of the newest giants of international cruising leave Málaga from the shore.
